Looking to potentially build a pool at my house within the next year. Anyone have any recommendations?

Good pool builder, very fair prices.

Just don't leave your kids around his brother.....

Not unless he recently got in it. He's landscaping primarily I believe. He

is a talented guy. My advice on building a pool is be careful and don't go with the lowest bid. Go with the most established, best
reputation guy that's going to be around in 30 years. There are a bunch of pool builders who are nothing but middle men for Mexican labor and who
don't necessarily get very involved in the process.

While on the subject, is $50-75k still the going rate for a middle of the road in ground pool? I know you can basically find a way to spend any dollar amount under the sun, but that seems to be the estimate that I normally hear for your average back yard pool

Damn. Prices must have gone way up in the last 20 years if that is true. My parents put in a really nice one in in 1998 or so for about $25k. Seemed nice to me anyway.

Are you talking gunite or a liner pool. In Texas it's almost entirely gunite with a plaster/pebbletec finish. $75k is about right for a 20,000 gallon pool with no frills. You can have a liner pool of equivalent size put in for about $40-$45k... If you can find someone to build a liner pool. They have the stigma of being a "above ground pool burried in the ground." I wanted to do a liner pool, but my wife and friends said no way... They were right. When all you see are gunite pools a liner pool definitely looks "cheaply built", but in reality they are perfectly fine. If I lived in an area where they were common, I would go with a liner. Cause $30k still means something to me.

Yeah, those are pretty close to the estimates I’ve been seeing as well. My neighbor just put in a gunite pool along with a cedar gazebo, and it’s nice, but I have no doubt that he dropped well over 6 figures for all of it.

If I ever end up putting one in, I’ll probably go the fiberglass route. My biggest issue, though, is that I tend to move around a decent amount for work, so I’m just not at a point in my life yet where it financially makes any sense

I highly recommend a fiberglass pool, less upkeep when compared to liner or gunite. I have had a Catalina Pool for over 20 years and have sold several more after people have seen mine. Catalina Pools is a family run business out of Memphis that manufactures and installs their own pools. They only have 3 models but they will show up at 8 am and you will be able to swim by sundown the next day, sooner if you have the water pressure to fill it.

Buy a house with a pool if you really want one.

My wife & I just went through this debate when we bought a house recently. She wanted a house with a pool, but I was able to talk her out of it. I know who would be doing all the work to maintain it...

She still has hopes that maybe we'll save up & put one in, but I don't see that happening unless $50k just falls in my lap.

Seems reasonable to assume you'd have to spend a bit to restore your lawn after the heavy equipment used to build the pool destroyed your grass and landscaping.

Are you going to cover the pool area with a screen enclosure? My son's in Panama City Beach, and Hurricane Michael damaged their existing screen cover. Their initial quote to repair was over $30K from opportunististic "professionals", but the final repair price was around $15K. The previous owners had had it installed a few years ago for about $16K. Though subject to damage, the screen cover is highly desirable since it keep debris out of the pool, plus it filters the sunlight somewhat.
