I'm looking to get a lightweight knife to carry. What are you gentlemen currently using/recommend?

Thanks.

Urban Shark by CRKT. Don't let the name put you off. Open it's about 6.5 inches long, has the usual thumb knob to open it. Good looking and keeps a good edge.

The cheapest one I can find. I have a $4 one I bought at co-op when I was in Starkville 15 years ago. I have lost about 5 $70-100 knives in that time. It is impossible for me to lose the $4 knife evidently.

Usually a Benchmade Presidio or Benchmade 710, but I've got an ESEE Zancudo that I carry at work or if I want something really light and flat. For a fixed blade I really like my ESEE Izula II.

Benchmade, Benchmade, Benchmade, then everything else. There are levels of Benchmade, red box means American design but imported, blue box means American made, and black box is hand fitted collector grade knives. CRKT are good knives for the money, imported but the price reflects this.

Slight hijack: what do you guys use for sharpening knives? My dad used to use a wet stone and oil, and I've seen gadgets at Walmart. I'd almost rather have someone knowledgeable do it for me so I won't screw it up.

Lansky. If I can use it to make a knife sharp, anyone can. I also have a warthog, but I like it less. It mars/scratches the blade too badly.

I use my grandfather's whet stone & oil. It take longer. I'm sure many of those gadgets work better. I've just never sprung for one, for like you, I didn't want to waste money on a gimmick.

Best and easiest to use is by Block ($19.99 on Amazon and everywhere else.) Has a flat plastic handle and two sharpening rods that cross in a fixed position. After following the easy instructions about sharpening, an even easier way once you get your edge established is just to hold it in your hand, line everything up, and just pull your knife through about 4 or 5 times. Excellent results. Keep mine by my tv chair.

I am completely unable to get a good edge with a sharpening stone. Personal failing.

I have a Buck. It's not the greatest quality (Chinese made I'm sure), but it was only $20 on Amazon. I had a Tree Brand, great knife, for years, but discovered I had it in my pocket when I was about to go through security at the airport and had to trash it.

Gerber Artifact on my keychain
(yes, it uses a replaceable x-acto/hobby blade, but it's cheaper than the TSA keeping it when you forget it's on you)
and normally a Leatherman skeletool.

I have been carrying a Smith and Wesson Black Ops 2.5" spring assist knife. Not too expense and keeps an edge. It has a little tab on the spine when closed, or you can use the thumb button to flick open the knife to open. It is almost a switch blade. The reason it is legal it that the blade is not in tension at all times to open like an actual switch blade. They have 2 sizes, but I carry the smaller one. It even has the pocket clip if you want to use it.

Benchmade. All their knives come with lifetime warranty. So a couple of time a year, I'll send them back to benchmade and they will service knife, replace anything that needs work, and will sharpen the blade like new....No cost. Great company and great customer service.

About 7 years ago, I had the perfect little single blade case pocket knife and was about to board at Cruise Ship in Mobile and realized it was still in my pocket. The truck was about a mile away from where I was..... I had my wife take in the womens restroom which was right by where we were standing in line to go through the metal detector, so I told her to take it in there and trash it. That really sucked!!
