This board is always a great source of info for me so figured I would post this here. Heading out to Pittsburgh next weekend for the first time with the family to catch a couple games against the Yankees. Staying downtown and planning to do the incline, Primanti brothers etc but any little known recommendations or must eats (two little ones so nothing too fancy)? Thanks in advance!!

There was a Louisiana themed restraunt..I don't remember the name, but the creole was very good. Cool atmosphere. Right in the heart of downtown.

There are some restaurants with good views up on Mt. Washington (take the venicular up the incline). Southside also has some good places to go like the Hofbrau Haus but from downtown you would need to drive or uber. If you like exploring schools Pitt and CMU are next door to each other up in the Oakland neighborhood.

I really like the Church Breworks. This place can be polarizing though unfortunately. People have had extremely negative experiences but we have never had them but could see how that could happen. Some of the employees need to be let go but I guess the owners are reluctant.
It is really some building. I love the specialty pierogies and beer here. Overall it is a must see experience for someone visiting.
Some other recommendations are Peace love and mini donuts for breakfast or snack and the Italian delis and restaurants in The Strip district. I would pass on the Primanti Brothers there.

Most convenient place to stay when going to Heinz Field or PNC Park would be on the North Shore. I saw you will be staying in town which is still within easy walking distance to the stadiums Clemente Bridge (6th street bridge I think).
North Shore has plenty of hotels, bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. Additionally, there is a Casino (must be 21 to enter), the Pittsburgh Science Center (with Omnimax theater) children might enjoy ages? and the Andy Warhol Museum. Restaurants (moderately priced) on the North Shore include Bettis Grille 66, Bar Louie, Tequila Cowboy etc. (many have outdoor dining weather permitting)..An upscale restaurant located on the North Shore would be Hyde Park Restaurant.

If you are staying downtown, you can walk to see Point State Park, Fort Pitt Museum and Market Square which have many moderately priced restaurants and higher end ones including Morton's and a Ruth Chris.

Great views of the city can found at the Mt. Washington Restaurants. Two good ones are Lemont Restaurant and Monterey Bay Fish Grotto. Most restaurants on Mt Washington are upscale and pricey.

Pitt and CMU(Oakland area) are about 4 miles from Heinz Field/PNC Park so you would have to take a cab over to see the campuses. Additionally, across the street from the Pitt Campus there is the Carnegie Museum (great dinosaur collection) and Art Museum and Phipps Consevatory.

Located on the South Side (need a cab) the Haufbraus House Restaurant (moderately priced-always Ocktober fest) is fun or Cheesecake Factory.

You can google most of the sites I referenced to decided if you have any interest.

Pittsburgh is a fun city have a great stay.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

You HAVE to try Gaucho Parrilla. I've been craving it every single day since the last time I was in the Steel City.

I did not enjoy Primanti Brothers at all. But if you're going to Pittsburgh, you should probably try it and decide for yourself.
By the way, Pittsburgh is probably my favorite city I've visited, which may sound crazy, but I've been there 5 separate times for RU and Phillies games, and I had a great time every visit.

Always wanted to go to Pittsburgh - heard it was a beautiful city plus it looked really cool in the movie Wonder Boys with Michael Douglas. Enjoy!

Been to Pittsburgh many times - great city. Good stuff in the thread already, but I would definitely park downtown (cost me $6 last time) and walk across the bridge to PNC. I would also go to the Strip District, which is a renovated warehouse district that house restaurants, cool shops and gourmet food markets. Even has the largest seafood (yes seafood) market I've ever been in. If its a nice day, go to Schenley Park, which is right next to Carnegie Museum, and is between Pitt and Carnegie Mellon.

Pitt promotes the fact that it plays at Heinz where the STeelers play to their incoming students (and football recruits). Actually this is mostly a negative as many students and fans don't bother heading downtown. I know kids who go there and they say they go to 1 game a year, maybe two. I went to grad school at CMU you used to be able to just walk over to their Stadium in Oakland and catch the games which was convenient but even then with Marino playing QB there were many empty seats for a lot of games.

I suspect many of the negatives have come from people who visited Primantis near the Pitt campus, which is basically a sandwich shop with no atmosphere. If you want to experience Primanti Brothers, go to the original location in the Strip District. I, for one, do NOT think it is over-rated. I think it is great.

Agreed, Good Point. If you think a Fat Sandwich is a must eat in New Brunswick (not saying you should necessarily) you really should go.

Not crazy and I would not go quite that far. But for me it is the city I enjoyed more than my initial expectations than any other. I was there for every RU -PITT game from the early 90s to the end of the series. Always had a good time.
Two points on the town and it's people:
They really like the Steelers. Everyone - all the time.
The locals really like living in their town.

LOL!!!!

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported attendance was 7076 fans in attendance for the Pitt Spring Game.

Not really sure why people bring up spring game attendance.

Rutgers will be having their spring game Saturday so will be interested in Rutgers stadium pictures on fan attendance.

I also heard that Penn State decided to Celebrate their winning of the 2016 B1G Championship the 2nd week of September football game.

Wait

They will be playing Pitt that weekend.

I wonder who Penn State considers a true rival.

LOL!!!!

I was wondering when you you went to CMU for grad school what was your major.

I guess it may have been in Engineering, Computer Science or Business.

CMU is outstanding in those areas.

People who attend grad school at Pitt are are attracted to Pitt's Health Related Professions.

All of Pitt's Health Schools Programs are rated in the Top 20 Programs in the United States.

Pitt's Medical School is rated #15 in the Nation (Tied with the University of Chicago) and Pitt's Physical Therapy Program is rated #1 in the Nation and Pitt's Pharmacy Program is rated #9 in the Nation. Pitt is a CMU equivalent in graduate school of Health Professions.

These rankings are based on the latest ranking of US News (Americas Best Graduate Programs).

Pitt is an amazing city which surprised me when I first visited there. I've been probably 20 times (girlfirend lived there) and proposed to my now wife on the Duquesne Incline.

What is neat about PItt is that it has the cool grit of a city (but safe with great restaurants - surprisingly great restaurants if you go to the right ones) but also has really cool culture and you can tell that in the late 1800s it was dripping in that Carnegie money. Some beautiful old buildings that a lot of other cities can and will never have.

Pittsburgh is a bunch of different neighborhoods due to the hilly topography and the rivers.
For Pirates games we'd always park downtown and walk the Clemente Bridge which to me is an experience in iteself b/c it basically dumps you at the foot of amazing PNC park. You can also take the boat to the stadium from the southside (I think station square). I think it's called the Yankee Clipper. People also drive their own boats up the river and tailgate outside the stadium on the river.

I'll give a quick NYC comparison primer for neighborhoods
Lawrenceville = Lower East Side
South Side = Hoboken / Upper East Side
Oakland = New Brunswick (Pitt and Carnegie Mellon)
Shadyside = tough one, my favorite neighborhood there. like the Yuppie PIttsburgh crowd
Strip District: nothing similar really. bunch of touristy warehouses and markets. Maybe an outdoor Chelsea Market.

Off the beaten path type stuff depending upon how much time you have:
The original Forbes Field in Oakland they still have an outfiled wall which you can go and see
Frick house and grounds (2nd richest guy besides Carnegie) you can tour his garage and see all his old cars. I think it's free
Heinz Museum: Closer to downtown and they sometimes have cool exhibits. They had an NFL one when I was there and they had the lombardi trophy there.

Def ride the Duquese Incline.
Uber has self driving cars there so use your Uber app and one might pick you up.

If it's nice out I'd walk to Point State Park and see the giant fountain and walk the river walkway too.
