Olympics Opening Ceremony draws record-low ratings: Why aren't Americans tuning in?

https://sports.yahoo.com/olympics-o...-why-arent-americans-tuning-in-011318548.html

NBC is facing a cataclysmic loss of audience for the 2022 Winter Olympics as viewership tanked for Friday’s Opening Ceremony, averaging just 16 million.

It is a record low for the Opening Ceremony (20.1 million for 1988 in Calgary was the previous record) and a whopping 43 percent below the 2018 Games in South Korea that notched 28.3 million viewers despite also dealing with a less than advantageous Asian time zone for American audiences.

It comes on the heels of Thursday’s ratings disaster that saw just 7.7 million people tune in, dramatically below same-night audiences of 2018 (16 million) and 2014 from Russia (20.02 million).

Never interested in the opening ceremonies which I believe was solely NBC. Do the later ratings include the USA Network? They had the downhill on live last night while NBC was basically rebroadcasting earlier events where people knew the results

We just had an Olympics (and it was the better one).

I usually do, but have not so far.
Few reasons;
1. Different time zone, so you hear results before NBC airs the event
2. I don't watch NBC outside of major sports so I have not seen any Olympic advertising to hype up people or events or gain my interest
3. Winter Olympics, I'm usually following only a few events like Hockey
4. Olympics used to be all consuming on one of 4 main channels, today it is one of hundreds of streaming/TV options.

Lots of people against the games on principle

China was locking down cities bigger than NYC because of mysterious disease flare-ups. Some were reports of a CV variant, and other reports were of a hemorrhagic illness. CCP said CV wouldn't get to Beijing and it did. Then they said it wouldn't get inside the bubble and it did. ESPN and others wouldn't send reporters out of health concerns. Why send athletes into a hot zone after all the mayhem?

On top of that China and Russia use game opening to announce an escalated partnership against US and allies (which US has been forcing tbh). Iran is also part of the new axis. US announced Kiev had been invaded by Russia but Kiev said it wasn't true and US media pulled initial report. Lots of people expect CCP to act vs Taiwan after the games - which have been called a "coronation" for China's dictator.

I've been watching, apparently, we suck at a lot of stuff. Maybe if there's an E-sports Winter Olympics, we'd be good at that. You know all those fast twitch couch athletes we have here in the States.

I'm just happy that the Chinese have finally revealed their dastardly plot to conquer the world, one luge rider at a time.

Love the Winter Olympics and have watched more than usual. Even watched some pre-Games qualifiers for the first time. Timing between NFL playoffs and Super Bowl was perfect.

Women's Slopestyle was great on Sat and so was men's luge last night. During the latter, I believe every athlete subsequently edged out previous guy to take over first place until final guy got the gold.

Never saw the attraction of opening ceremony so skipped that like always. Will watch mostly on-demand through NBC Sports app. Much prefer to watch a full single event than the prime time coverage ordeal.

Lmao.

I figured this thread would be the usual group of windbags with their "I'm angry about something again and actively don't care about the Olympics so much I have to write about how much I don't care."

Am not disappointed.
I know, right? Pretty funny.

I cannot imagine going through life so pissed off all the time. It’s like a hate contest. Whoever hates the most stuff, people, countries, whatever, wins. LOL

I feel bad for anyone who supports a brutal dictatorship’s propaganda

Yesterday, CCP state media claimed as fact that they invented skiing

Have you seen what they are feeding imprisoned quarantined athletes? I wouldn’t feed those trays to my dog

Or that the olympics app all athletes use has spyware that listens to their conversations and sends data back to a CCP hub

But yeah, let’s clap as Putin and Xi join hands to cement a new Axis of Evil!

Some folks truly are clueless

Or, ya know, maybe recognize the Olympics as an event that transcends complex international relationships and for a brief moment in time focuses on spirit and teamwork and other positive things, giving everyone something to share before we get back to the serious business of trying to blow **** up.

I agree, it's just too bad Xi and Putin felt otherwise and used the platform for something other than the Spirit of the Games. It's kind of hard to ignore as much as one might try.

I don’t know what country you live in, but here in America — we don’t bow to dictators, we don’t support brutal censorship of free speech, we don’t condone mass genocide of minority groups, and we don’t look the other way at state-operated organ harvesting.

But hey, maybe figure skating is more important to you than those things.

I enjoy watching sports I can’t normally watch. Speed skating and skeleton for example. These Olympics really have been aggravating to watch though. The snow is fake and terrible, everyone is skipping and sliding everywhere

The IOC is the 2nd most corrupt organization in the world closely behind FIFA. So many of you think it's a great world event. It's a great money maker for the IOC and China that's all. Once it went all pro athletes it went down hill fast.

Well, half of America does…..actually it’s worse they have their heads up Trumps *** instead of bowing down. You do you though…at least your screen name fits your statements.

You can tell plenty of times the announcers know the real problem, then quickly under someone's directions give the obligatory, "well the athletes just have to get their nerves out of the way and hit that big move".

I heard it a few times where they were talking about the surfaces and quickly changed course. It's almost like there's some Chinese guy behind the camera with a big stick waiting to wack them like Sister Elizabeth did when I asked if Mary was a hooker?

Not supporting our athletes who are already there is really gonna topple China. Strong play.

Honestly, you should be happy China is hosting, a near-guaranteed boondoggle. Beyond that, lighten up.

You're being myopic.

Enjoying the Olympics as an event doesn't mean you condone all the actions of a host or participating country. It's entirely possible to condemn all of those things, to work to combat them, and still enjoy the event in the very spirit in which it is intended.

The world is not "either / or" and complex issues are even less so.

Tend to agree, I mean the Uyghur torch lighter was just a bit too obvious. Already a few shenanigans apparently (see team speed skate disqualifications & team ski jump), while China's Zero Covid regime is playing havoc with the athletes (who seem not very happy with the scene in general). Had a bit of a smile concerning the American born Chinese ice skater falling on her *** & her 'countrymen' berating her on social media.

I might read about it, probably not going to watch much, if any. TBH, NBC's promotion of the games pretty much sucked going in. I don't watch as much live TV as I used to, but I didn't notice that much advertisement of possible stars. Maybe I'll catch some of the curling & probably the men's ice skating (although 1 of the USA stars is out due to COVID), but that's just about it.

Tonight - USA vs Canada womens Ice hockey
Tues.- Women's luge, men's free style sking
Wed.- Short track speed skating, men's skeleton, Alpine sking

These have the most wrecks. And they're spectacular when they happen. I like the agony of defeat. 😁

I respect this in spirit, and above all, respect you being cordial.

I love the olympics, and thoroughly enjoy it.

But if this was the 1936 or 1940 Olympics games in Germany, should we have been watching? Knowing that media dollars and our complicity would be supporting the Nazis?

I’d like to think if I was in that time period, I wouldn’t watch. Just my opinion.

NBC/Comcast/Universal has an immense amount of power in that complicity. Their news coverage has always been soft on CCP atrocities, and why? Because they have overwhelming business relationships in China.

If NBC’s ratings are crap, then maybe, just maybe other networks think twice about bidding on a dictator’s coronation gathering.

Most importantly, the CCP is not hosting the olympics out of the goodness of their hearts. It is to legitimize their empire, to join hands with Putin in a big public display against the West, and to pony out a poor uighur in the opening ceremony so idiots across the world buy the propaganda.

I want to believe in grand, beautiful vision of the world joining hands and celebrating our athletes. But it’s pretty hard when our very own athletes are being spied on through their phones, ridiculed on state-sponsored social media platforms, fed like dogs, and being used as propaganda pieces.

NPR had a little write-up worth a look, and this only scratches the surface from what’s been reported from eyewitnesses:

I'm rarely certain what any of your posts purport to say, but I'm pretty sure this one isn't going to win any awards for... well... anything.

You're not looking to discuss the issue - I think @Ash_Hole is doing a good job of that. You just want to piss and moan about what your perceive as injustices against you. I wish you luck. May you find what you're searching for.
