OT: NY Mets Season

Ok, forget the low hanging fruit on how the Mets are too cheap to bring in quality free agents that they needed this year like in one or more of Cain, Moustakis, Arrieta, Hosmer, etc. Think about how badly the Mets ravaged their farm system in that theres only ONE alleged stud out of hundreds (Peter Alonso... and I say alleged because Rosario and Smith were allegedly studs as well). Yet look at the Yankees, Indians, Cubs, Braves, Phillies, Dianmondbacks, Rockies, Dodgers, Cardinals, etc. Even the freaking Nationals have this 19 YO snacking bombs into oblibion.

Meanwhile the Mets have the 29th best MiLB system. And it's so bad they brought the man who built up the system before to fix it.

When Omar was hired, the Wilpons were flush with Madoff make-believe money. Omar was pretty much given an open checkbook, and was not shy about using it. Pedro Martinez, Billy Wagner, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Tom Glavine, and later Johan Santana. And Omar did do what he was commissioned to do. He produced a solid contender, which is really all a GM can do.

Omar's flaw was that he didn't recognize that after 2008 it was time to retool. Instead he decided to go with an expensive bullpen patch of K-Rod and JJ Putz. The team went on a downward spiral which proved to be his demise.

Enter Sandy - and enter a new era of Wilpon austerity. Alderson did build a winner, albeit on a foundation Minaya had laid. Now it is time for Alderson to retool; however, no foundation is in place.

To summarize: Omar did what he was brought in to do. Circumstances changed, and it became time for him to go - with our gratitude and thanks for what he accomplished. Sandy too did what he was brought in to do, and we thank him for that. But now it is time for him, too, to go.

But hey, the offense sored 3 runs! deGrom must have been foaming at the mouth.

I think the Mets will go into talks with the Yankees about deGrom to flush out more from any team in the AL that thinks it has a shot this season. This would be a win-win to me.

Exactly what's going on at the moment. Unless it's some sort of 3 way deal,the Mets will never help the Yankees and will get more from other teams thinking they would. It would be insanity.

That is a disturbing stat for two reasons. Obviously .082 sucks. But only 61 RISP opportunities in 14 games (just over four per game) may suck worse. Too many duckless ponds.

What a beautiful morning! Heading out today with the family on our first beach vacation of the summer (almost). The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the Yanks are winning, and the Mets are setting MLB records!

Mets have the tenth highest payroll (Boston #1, Yanks #7) according to Sportrac which tracks MLB payrolls in real-time. Unfortunately for the Mets, more than 50% of their payroll dollars are currently on the disabled list.

I would say that long-term it doesn't look any better for the Amazins, but a couple of years ago the future looked pretty bleak for the Yankees.
If they can unload some of their older guys for some carefully-selected young talent they could be relevant in a couple of years, I guess.

Outstanding vehicle with a questionable powertrain.

Which, really, is surprising. The GM LFX motor is a great engine and one of the better V-6s currently in production. It positively rocks in the Alpha chassis (ATS and Camaro) implementations. Ditto the 8 speed automatic. But in the XT5 Cadillac has added cylinder shutdown and some more efficient transmission programming which results in a less than satisfying experience. For 80% of all drivers it's not particularly noticeable but if you like to play boy racer in your SUV from time to time the deficiencies will surface.

Matz got his head together when there were runners on base. The way he described it, he was white knuckles with men on base. Matz gets a lot of ****, but I like the guy. Local kid grinding it out. Hope he succeeds.
