The entire bullpen did a great job last night. I especially liked the way Lugo pitched.

Gsellman and Lugo taking to their BP roles with such gusto has been the development of the season as of right now.
Nothing bad about sweeping your division rivals, at their stadium. I do discount it a bit, with Murphy out of the lineup. Bullpen has been great so far. Offense just enough.
This may sound crazy, but I was enthralled by A-Rod's commentary last night. He brings great insight and depth. Kind of reminded me, dare I say, of when Tim McCarver first brought a player's perspective to the booth. I enjoyed his bromance with Conforto, and the bit about Conforto's approach to hitting. It was also interesting to hear how much of a Mets fan A-Rod was and how he really wanted to come to the Mets from Seattle, rather than going to Texas.
Things could have been different.

AROD is great in the booth. It was always pretty much known he wanted to play for the Mets but of course the Wilpons screwed it up.
Or it could've been Boras' demands to give ARod a piece of the concessions money to go along with the $250 Million.
It's a negotiating tactic. Instead of having some dialogue and working them off the ridiculous demands they just closed shop and said no deal would be done.
Boras and Wilpon never had a decent relationship before and after this and this didnt help things.

I think he is a Marlin fan. He should be more concerned about giving up 20 runs to the Phils.

I know we mostly hate Fatsessa on these boards, but his rant that the Mets had to get Mike was the thing that put unbelievable pressure on the front office to make that move.

However, the Mets never had the money the Rangers were offering for the then Mariners star shortstop. Duquette, who was serving as the Mets' assistant GM at the time, said the acquisition wasn't even a possibility.
"[Rodriguez] indicated he was going to accept somewhere over $100 less to play for the Mets," Duquette told The Post's Mike Puma. No chance. I don't believe that for one second."
Duquette noted that an offer was never put forward to A-Rod. He met with then-GM Steve Phillips along with his agent, Scott Boras, but his requests were too over-the-top to be taken seriously. He wanted office space at Shea Stadium, and a tent to sell his merchandise among others.
"Are you kidding me?" Duquette said. "Can you imagine that then or now? It just wouldn't happen. We barely had enough office space for the people who worked there. We are going to try to carve another office out for Alex Rodriguez or any player? We all now how big the clubhouse was there at Shea, it was pretty tiny."
I think they might all be right. I don't think ARod was strongly considering the Mets at the time. But in hindsight, I think he regrets that he didn't.
ARod would have loved to come to the Met's as long as they were the highest bidder. They werent, so he didnt. Pretty simple

Hard to believe one key injured player has had such a huge impact on that Nats. If their pitching is as good as it was last night against the Braves, they will recover.
They lose Harper for any extended period of time and they will struggle quite a bit. He was their entire offense against us last weekend. I agree their pitching is formidable but I want to see if their bullpen holds up.
We just need to take care of our own business and everything will fall into place for us. Great to sweep the Nats but just need to stay the course. I know we had some off days but really would like to see a SP go a little deeper just to give the pen a rest.
Exactly. Harvey and Matz are 5 inning guys right now and Thor 6. They all need to get it to at least 7 per start. Wheeler seems like he throws 100 pitches in 5 innings every start so not much of help. Vargas can be an innings eater when he gets healthy.
I honestly don't care how many innings the starters are going during this early part of the year...If it is 5/6/7...all good with me if they stay healthy and are pitching well through the summer.
It's all fools gold...there is no way the Met's keep this up. True team will show and very likely drop the last 2 against the Marlins and then get swept by the Nats at home.
Do you remember last year when the starters could not go more than 5? Bullpen was spent by early May. You need innings from the starters to have a successful year.
Is it different this year with Gsellman and Lugo in bullpen as long relievers?

Saying these guys need to all get at least 7 innings every start is extremely unrealistic with how baseball is played now. Forget about pitch counts and everything, you're going to have plenty of times where starters will need to be pulled sooner just for PH purposes.
If we assume a 9 inning game (no xtras) x162 we end up with 1458 innings to be pitched. If the starters average 5 innings, they will account for 810 innings leaving 648 innings for the pen. A seven man pen will avg 92.5 innings per reliever. That will burn out a pen. You need your starters to give you length to have live arms in September.
I agree with RBS to a certain extent. It's just too early in the season to be thinking that you are getting seven from your starters across the board. Also, baseball is just heading in a different direction with shorter outings for starters and deeper bullpens. People are in love with the whole not facing the batting order three times thing.
What helps the Mets is that you have two starters in the pen now that will be able to give you a couple of innings at a time and not act like china dolls.
Thinking as season progresses starters will give 6 not 5 innings but agree giving 5 is too taxing on the bullpen.
Loathe too many bullpen innings too, but I will trust the Callaway process.
Too early to draw any conclusions. Also Mets have decided to go with a 4 man starting rotation to start the season through 9 games. That will change tomorrow when Wheeler gets called up to start. As the season progresses, some of the starters will warm up and they'll be stretched out.
There's a whole lot of difference between 5 innings and "at least 7" from all of your starters.
No team gets that, which is why I said your expectations are unrealistic.
