In 1775, the US Army went to Congress and said "Look, the Navy is whining saying they don't have anyone to guard their ships because none of their sailors are smart enough to use weapons without hurting themselves. Take a few of these people that aren't smart enough to join us and have them do it"...and thus, the Marine Corps was born.

Or at least that's what they taught us at Basic.

Tragic story, but love the lore and song that came from it. I do not think there is a worse way to die than that with water and waves pulling an entire ship down.

I can remember being a young man and listening to the song on the radio at night it just seems so creepy cool. My father used to talk about the event in very reverent tones. He lived off Lake Michigan in North Chicago I've always been a big fan of Gordon Lightfoot.
