I just finished Ambroses's book, D-Day, June 6, 1944.

Can anyone recommend a similar book on that subject that perhaps discusses actual events that participants endured?

The Bedford Boys by Alex Kershaw. It describes the men from Bedford VA, the town that had the most dead per capita on D-Day.

The standard for the topic is of course The Longest Day by Cornelous Ryan. It's the book the movie was based on.

More sports themed than military history but recently finished The All Americans by Lars Anderson. Pretty interesting about Army-Navy football players involved in D-Day.
