Hang in there. Self inflicted is right. The last few weeks my wife has been in various amounts of despair/frustration/anger/fear. She’s been on more early morning/late night/weekend calls than I have ever seen - trying to sort out ever changing students/plans/etc. given by the admins (don’t mean to blame - these people have it tough too as their marching orders kept changing). As rough as today was, I think maybe she has a small sense of relief that they are at least getting on with it. The dramatic shifts of plans and responsibilities were starting to drive her a bit nuts.
I hope your wife had a better day today. Mine was definitely better as the kids were more settled in and acting a bit more normal. My technology still blows, but now that I know that I can have workarounds to get by. It's amazing that they spend so much money on this electronic stuff and they don't get mad when it doesn't work.

Heard reports of adults hacking in to google meets and one sicko exposed himself to the class before the teacher turned it off

This is a major problem

Thanks so much for asking, that is very kind (and teacher typical). After another sleepless night, while prepping for her day she got really upset. When I got up around 7ish there were sniffles and a few tears and we talked through some things. A lot of stuff is getting piled on her, especially kids from other grades/schools and she is getting very little support from really anyone. The actual day was probably ok. But as I type, she is working on plans/etc. and will be until 11pm at least.

For me personally, it was worse than yesterday. My first grader is muscling through, but my K guy is really struggling. On the odd times that I can sit with him, even I was fumbling through all the folder and papers, only to get the one assignment he needed, right as the class was moving on. And his teacher (and assistant) is so sweet, she just had my oldest last year, and they are really working and trying so hard to keep it together. It’s all real tough. I hope we can find a rhythm soon. Or better yet, hope everybody just realizes that this is all crazy and take precautions, but send the young kids and their teachers back to school.

2 more days then the weekend. Hopefully your wife can relax a bit.
I hope it gets easier as the days pass for you both.

Figured I'd update. 2 weeks and my class has now rotated through one time for a full week. My week 1 hybrid class has 9 kids in it it and my week 2 hybrid class only has 6 kids right now. I am a first grade teacher.

Positives: For the most part, the kids keep the masks on, except for a snack break and shot mask breaks. Started testing my kids this week and most of them have not regressed as readers. They maintained or advanced. I was surprised by that. We get a lot of work done due to the small class size and the kids get a ton of teacher support. Overall, the kids are having a blast being back.

Negatives: Parents are not happy with not having an every day in person option. It was the hot topic of my Q+A of back to school night. Some kids are just not cut out for virtual learning in anyway. Most have some learning or issues with focus and attention. Still not actual playground usage allowed, nor paper books. They claim its because they don't have a reliable cleaning plan. The kids need to read and play. IF not, whats the point of being in person? Virtual learning is not just very good either, through no fault of the teachers or students. Also, my district still doesn't have materials or technology to make it better due to national backlogs and shortages.

Overall, it's been a very strange and exhausting time. I'm glad I'm in person but it's been rough.

Very similar on my end. I am an aide in a special needs class of first and second graders. Our class meets 5 days a week for half days then they go home and have their specials in the afternoon. None of my students opted out but numerous did in the district. Kids are very happy being back but it is very hard for them. They do get tired working 4 straight hours in the same classroom at their age. We do try to get them outside when the weather is nice. Certain things you normally take for granted have had to change. We have always taught the students how important it is to share. Now anytime any classroom supplies are touched by one student they are either put in a bin to clean at the end of the day or the student can keep on the desk until the end of day (Which is usually distracting to our kids). Students miss gym, lunch and recess.
My wife teaches special ed in the same district but at the high school. She has many classes where the students doing virtual outnumber the students in class. She feels bad for those students In front of her, as she constantly must focus on the students working from home who are either having tech issues or problems learning/paying attention. Those students normally would have an aide with them in school to assist them.
Overall I feel like I am in a different world. Because I am in the same class all day you feel separated from everyone else. Only time I see my former students is after school Waiting to be picked up by their parents. Hallways are very quite,as we have limited schoolwide use of lockers. With no specials, students for the most part remain in the classroom.

Let's be honest. Doing virtual will little children is asinine and not productive in anyway. K, 1, 2, these lower grades should be all in-person. The sensible hybrid model is younger kids in, older kids remote.

Agreed. I think you'll see a lot of movement on this front when the trimester ends and people can choose a new option.

Definitely feel your pain. My district did have enough vision though to realize that teaching hybrid/virtual at the same time was not smart so I have a cohort class that takes on my off week students so I don't have to do it. I don't know how I would do it without this.

Word.
FYI, so far so good on our front. This was the first full week and it went smoothly. Little one is very happy. Obviously, things are different, but still plenty of great experiences, learning, and outdoor time.

They had to shut down one of our middle schools and they shut down the Hopewell high school due to Covid cases but I think they're both starting back up on Monday. One other thing that's nice is not having admins up your butt all the time. They haven't popped in my classroom since they year started.

Sounds like Princeton is desperate to go in-person (at least a portion) by mid-Oct. Monty is hopeless and not even saying anything. Likely all virtual for the rest of the calendar year. Lots of families bailing from both. We also received two new WW applications last week (not sure of the grades, I think middle school).

So far so good on virtual learning first 2 weeks compared to last years third tri-semester. To have our child virtually occupied through Zoom even for 4-4 1/2 hrs, 4 days a week, by 3 teachers with a few breaks, including lunch, and using SeeSaw for work assigned and completed is way better than Google Classroom's difficult process, using multiple apps and links, app to talk, link to read daily assignment, app to edit and send work, having all kinds of issues of loading work, editing, sending, receiving and correcting work. No accountability for attendance.

A lot of us including myself have gone to work through out this whole virus thing. 8 co-workers ended up with the virus but we continued on. We showed up every day and got the job done. I thought kids had to be in school because the rest of the world was getting too far ahead . Just what makes teachers so special ?
Have my employees back in the office. So much more productive. No teacher worth anything thinks teaching from home is acceptable. Only slackers.

Picked up my daughter from her first day of school, stayed outside. All the other parents were outside too on a big, open, sprawling lawn. Parents weren't allowed inside, everyone knew pickup was going to be outside. I was the only one out of about 30 without a mask on, and we all had plenty of distance. It was pretty shocking to me. The difference between perceived and actual risk is wildly disproportionate. Dunno how we are going to turn this thing around, honestly. As long as we're testing 25k people a day, we're going to find a few hundred "cases" a day. Seems thats all its going to take to keep people acting bizarre.

So in summary, society is coming to an end because the school is requiring you to wear a mask as a precautionary measure for the 5-10 minutes it takes to pick up your kid?

My 16 year old started his first job 2 months ago at Wegmans. Has to wear a mask for up to 6 hour shifts.......not a complaint

My middle schooler is on the bus and in school every day - wears a mask from 7:30 - 1:30......not a fng complaint.

Parent of kindergartner having to put on a mask to greet his kid outside at school........"donnu how we're going to turn this twisted society around"!!

It's been what, 3 weeks since school started and people here many even without kids are doing nothing but complaining. My my ....just how entitled and soft we adults have become as a society.

#unmask toughen up

Not so sure what is so hard about wearing a mask......or what makes someone tough because they wear or don't wear one. Do you wear a seat belt? Are you not tough because you do? If you had kids in the car, would you try to shame them for wearing a seat belt? PS........ I Don't wear a mask when I run or bike at the park. I wear a mask when it is required or when the situation calls for.....again, not really that hard. But then again, I'm not a shut-in sitting on the internet all day perpetuating Q-Conspiracies and Russian Meme's on social media and message boards.

PS....how did you use your education in life? Just curious as you seemed so hyper-focused on kids educational development being hindered because of masks.

I'll give an actual update on a 3yo (pre-school) and 4yo (pre-k) at a private daycare. School open since 6/15.

My kids could not care less about temperature checks, wearing masks, drop off/pickup at the front door.
They actually ask to come in stores now and say

Teachers are working 4days 10hr days instead of 5 days 8hrs.
So the teachers are there all day with their group and no need to hand off kids to a new teacher at the end of the day.

"Kiss and go" drop off at the front door has actually been great.
Kids used tonwhine and cry and cling when I had to walk them back to their classrooms.

Now they get temperature check, and walk in themselves.
3yo girl doesn't even say bye half the time - just grabs her brother and drags him in.
