The point being that those schools had to shut down within days of re-opening. This will continue to happen so what are the alternatives when students and staff have to quarantine? This is the infamous Georgia hallway photo: This looks safe social distancing to anyone? Is it any wonder they had to shut down again?
Just because some places choose to do it wrong doesn’t mean it can’t be done right.

All provided by the school along with a million dollars in facility upgrades - HVAC, air filtration, outdoor air sources for every classroom, touchless doors in the hallways and bathrooms, creation of 10 outdoor classrooms, etc.

We have to have windows open in every room the whole year because of the horrible air flow and problems with hvac. This is a problem is most if not all buildings because most of them are old . If we are still in school in December kids better bundle up .

That’s just the Georgia governor being an idiot and playing politics . Most likely Florida will do it that way too and wonder why the have to shut it down in a week. Up here we are doing it the opposite way , hence why a lot of schools are struggling to meet all the health standards before they open . In the south , they could care less

Understood, but no excuse not to be prepared for this. It started in March. By the way, when I slam "public schools" it is mostly about BOEs, admins, state/fed mandates, and teacher unions. In many ways, the teachers are just helpless and along for the ride.

My sister reminded me last night that two teachers kneeled at her kids school during the Pledge of Allegiance last year before a school event

Who pays their salaries again?

I get it . I’ve been planning all summer for virtual , in person and hybrid but we still don’t have many answers on a lot of details that will pop up everyday . Like we are three weeks from school and all lessons are supposed to be live steamed but we have no idea how that is going to work on our end .
It’s also easy to blame the admins and districts which I get but when the guidelines come out late and then they change 3 or 4 times and there isn’t endless money or space it’s not that easy . I know districts have been planning for these scenarios the whole time but it’s not that easy to replace or put in a lot of these things with lack of resources . And I work in a top ten district in an affluent town and it’s still a problem .

Well that settles it. I'm relocating to Paterson, NJ so I can get my kids in those great schools. These Fake News rankings remind me of those polls in 2016 giving HC a 99 percent chance of winning.
So you’re saying that Tennessee has a better education and schools than nj as a whole despite a million rankings proving otherwise ? Anyone with a functioning brain would say nj has better education . You are taking one of the poorest and worst districts in the state . I’m sure Memphis has great schools all around too . Y

Young children have been sneezing and coughing in schools for years and years. There are alot of germs out there. Your body fights it. It's called an immune system. Unless you have been shut in since March it should work. Getting the virus is not an automatic death sentence.
Of course they have but this time it is much more different as the virus is highly contagious. Can’t say the virus is not an automatic death sentence as we have hundreds of thousands of Americans dead including ones without previous health issues.

Father and son doctors die from Covid-19
Father and son physicians hospitalized on Father's day die weeks apart.

As I;ve mentioned several times on this board, a close relative is managing pharmaceutical trials, reviewing data / interfacing with a multi- hospital consortium :Her advice....follow the advice from Dr. Fauci!

Mo

I gotcha. If I was in your shoes I would follow the advice or your people in the pharmaceutical field just like I'll follow the advice of mine who is a hands on manager in the ICU working almost exclusively with Covid patients.

Want to worry ? Here's something actual to worry about.

36,000 Positive findings of school rooms and lunch rooms over the last 5 years in NYC schools for LEAD PAINT.

Over half in Pre-K rooms.

Bound Brook public schools are doing in person full day classes just like it was before the virus. Only difference is they are live streaming the classes so if anyone opts out they can do virtual.

Hope there is a contigency plan for the insane Karens who will be watching every second of the live feed looking to pounce on the teacher. Wait till parents try suing the district when the teachers tells poor little Johnny to wait 2 more minutes before using the bathroom.

High school teacher. I'd love to be back in the classroom teaching in person. However, I'd invite you all to come spend a day in the classroom in which I teach. Second floor of a building with 8" windows that open less than 45 degrees and AC that works sometimes and when it does, very poorly. Temperature has gotten up to 95+ in my classroom several times. I grin and bear it, whatever.

But now you want me to be in that poorly ventilated room 4 hours per day with students who are possibly carrying this virus? Masks don't do **** in that situation (unless you are teaching with a PROPERLY FITTED N95 which are hard to come by) and a face shield. May as well put a HAZMAT suit on. I can probably deal with it physically but there are many who teachers who couldn't suit up like that without passing out. And there are hundreds of teachers in the state facing similar situations. Oh and I work in Bergen County in a town that was hit hard. I had students and parents who had the virus back in the spring.

Again, I'm ready to go back and do this. Sick of being home. But not in those building conditions. They are oppressive in Sep/Oct to begin with. Students and teachers occasionally faint/pass out. Now you want to add COVID to that equation?

If they are not addressing the ventilation issues then you have a valid reason to not be in the classroom.

I want kids back in school but it has to be done the right way.

My other valid reason is wife expecting so she’s technically immunocompromised. If that weren’t case I’d be whatever about it. Still don’t think we end up going in until January.

The ventilation issue is a huge issue in most if not all schools . Schools in like 95 percent or more of the state are older buildings that have horrible systems that rarely function properly . Our rooms are usually like a sauna or freezing .

I’m not doubting King Murphy has made it a nightmare for schools but how come catholic and private schools were able to figure it out? Many are going back 5 full days. Well, until Union makes Murphy not allow them because school choice is bad

Many catholic schools have the means to and have been upgrading their HVAC and ventilation systems for years. You don’t shell out thousands of dollars to have your kid sit in a 95-degree classroom in Sept/Oct/May/June. My friend teaches at IHA and she told me they have installed a brand new air purification system to prepare. Me? I’m just asking for windows that open lol.

Slight correction.

My advice actually comes from several sources: all medical. The RN I speak of used to run the Hematology / Oncology Drug trials for a NW hospital chain...now she's running, analyzing / collecting data for the same group (researching protocols / studies: i.e. is the data sound, the methodology valid, can we rely on the results); a close friend who may become the head physician at one of the world's leading U's (in CA); a former band mate who became a neurosurgeon...and I read the news within the context of a paradigm: It's better to error on the side of conservatism.

But HEY we still all root for Rutgers!

True, but building maintenance more of a priority in private schools then middle of road to lower income area publics. Most of the northern Bergen County high schools are palaces compared to where i teach as are many of the larger shore conference regionals. I know, I see them all when I visit as a coach or for workshops. And my school is just south of Rt 4. I can’t imagine older buildings in Essex/Passaic/Hudson county schools.

Middle of the road and poor school districts receive the most per student from the state. Where does it all go?

Guess who pays for Abbott school districts too?

Isn't it great that half our school taxes go to Abbott schools? Our district doesn't have 1 to 1 chromebooks but some Abbott Schools do. If you read the article I linked you will get an idea of what a waste of taxpayer money Abbott schools are.

Here is the list of local school districts, where they were ranked among 650 New Jersey districts and how much they paid for each student in 2018: Asbury is around $42,000 a year now.

  • #2 ASBURY PARK $31,915
  • #149 POINT PLEASANT BEACH $17,821
  • #340 BELMAR $15,623
  • #436 MANASQUAN $14,671
  • #544 POINT PLEASANT BORO $13,415
