I think 30 other teams would have picked Lafrenierre first with Byfield 2nd.

Rags also Drafted Defenseman Braden Schneider with the 19th pick after trading up from 22 to leap frog the Devils.

Nice aggressive move. Newark really wanted to draft him.
That pick was a head scratcher for the Rangers. They have quite the logjam going at RHD.
Logjam doesn't mean you still can't improve. Good value with that pick.

A two-way, right-shot defenseman capable of playing on the power play and penalty kill with great competitiveness and smarts, the 19-year-old is a more physically developed player and finishes checks with authority in all areas of the ice. Schneider (6-2, 202) scored 42 points (seven goals, 35 assists), including 20 on the power play, and was plus-9 in 60 games this season.
NHL.com analysis: The Rangers moved up to select a defenseman who plays a hard, physical game. Schneider's offensive game is developing and includes a strong shot from the point that could fit on a second power-play unit. He projects to be a top-four defenseman who can play in all situations.
Their prospect pool is lighter on centers than anything else, and there were a few available that I liked there.
Where are you getting that from? I don't think he was on the Devils radar, they liked this Russian kid when they were scouting his teammate Rodion Amirov.
They might have leapfrogged the Jackets instead who were at #21 and I could easily have seen Schneider not getting past them.

They should have picked Byfield, or maybe traded the #1, so as to get a center. They've spent a lot of draft capital on wings in recent drafts. That is typically not how Cup teams are built.
That makes less sense than drafting the best player and picking up a center via trade/free agency.

Our second first-round pick might very well be better than our first one, Dawson Mercer is comparable to Patrice Bergeron.
The Devils have compiled a nice stable of forwards down on the farm, in fact their whole prospect pool is fantastic, the only team who might be better is the Rangers.

"Picking up" a franchise quality center, which Byfield has the potential to be, is easier said then done.

Can't pass on Lafreniere. Best prospect since Crosby. No way you miss out on that.
I agree you don't pass on Lafreniere, but did you forget that Mcdavid existed?
I don't know if I would call him the best prospect since Crosby, this would be saying he's going to be better than Kane, McDavid, Stamkos, Tavares, MacKinnon, etc....I would hold your horses on that claim.

Dude, he's a great player and will only get better, but almost all past #1 picks have the same or comparable resumes.
LaF and McDavid are comparable prospects, both not as good as Crosby, but clearly better than the rest since then.

I would highly recommend you change your ways of critiquing prospects.
You're putting waaaay to high expectations on this kid. Awards are the not best method to grade prospects.

I trust the NHL experts on this. No prospect is a sure thing, but saying he is the best prospect since Crosby is accurate.
Nowhere near comparable to McDavid.
He's a pretty similar prospect to the winger you drafted last year.
He's confused by headlines like this:

Which might be true. Q has only produced 2 #1's between Crosby and Lafreniere.

And I also wouldn't argue there is no chance he could be the best overall prospect since Crosby, the Rangers got a superb talent yesterday, a legit blue-chipper.
I would. There is no way he is better then McDavid. And that is not a knock of course.
Now could he be better then Tavares, MacKinnon, or Matthews? Possible but not likely. Especially as a winger. Taylor Hall seems like a good comparable imo.
I try to be fair and wait till I see them take the ice in the NHL.
Hall is not a bad comparison, minus the prima donna ego.
Taylor Hall is a couple years removed from an MVP. I agree he has an ego. If Lafreniere is Hall sans ego (and sans injury issues) he's a fantastic player.
So I thought I was being pretty fair too.
McDavid? I think "no chance" is a pretty fair call as well.
