Cale Makar won the Hobey Baker award (Heisman for NCAA hockey), signed with Colorado and scored a goal in his first NHL game last night.

In his draft year, a prominent hockey writer said the Devils were strongly considering drafting him 1st overall.

Hischier has been good but underwhelming as the top overall pick of the draft.

Better than Nolan Patrick so far but Heiskenan from Dallas and Pettersson from Vancouver area better players than Nico.

Makar will probably be better too in the long run.

I liked Makar too and wouldn't have complained about him if we drafted him #1 overall. But people are starting to shortchange Nico waaaaay too much lately, this kid is going to be a helluva hockey player, he's not going to blow you away on the ice like Connor McDavid or Nathan MacKinnon but he will make you a more complete team, the same way Patrik Elias did. I don't understand how anyone can say he's been overwhelming and this kid will get better as he getting stronger, he has a hockey IQ that very few players possess and his leadership skills are remarkable for a 20-year-old.

I would say the difference right now is, Makar plays defense. Typically, dmen need a few years to mature at the NHL level. We are only talking about one game, so obviously we won't rush to judgement.

For Devils fans, think you have to be happy with Nico's game. I think the Devils need to improve blue line, so you could make the argument that Makar wouldve been a good pick. BUT, then the group of forwards doesn't look as good, so as long as you're happy with the pick; there's no sense looking back.
Devils made a good pick, and if they picked Makar, I'd likely say the same.

But here is the other thing - no one really had Makar going #1, I think the only player where people can come back and say "You should have taken...." is Nolan Patrick who many had #1 on their list, not even Elias Pettersson who was selected #5, I don't recall anyone talking him up.

But the Devils do have two very solid prospects on the blue line in Jeremy Davies and Ty Smith, where they need help on the blue line is size, between these two and Will Butcher and another prospect Reilly Walsh, none of them will strike fear in opposing forwards when they go in front of the net.

I think the post was meant as underwhelming as a first overall.

But the simple truth is, not every draft year has a generational talent, e.g. McDavid or Crosby. Nice should only be compared within his draft year. There, he stacks up real well. Plus, he is still really young. He was a teenager coming in the league, not college graduate age.

He's been underwhelming for a first overall draft pick.

He's too easy to defend
What are the guidelines a first overall draft pick should perform to? It seems you want Nico to be like Connor McDavid because where he's selected and if he doesn't then he's not worthy. Forget the fact that he's the leading goal scorer out of the 2017 draft class. And this from a player who hardly saw time on the PP his rookie year and had his top winger out hurt for almost 2/3rds of this season.

You're not being logical.

He's good but doesn't scream, best player in his draft.

Looks like a guy with 12-15 overall ability.

A redraft would probably put Hischier around 5 at worst. It is Nolan Patrick who would probably drop into the mid-teens behind a lot of players just entering the league like Valimaki, Vesalainen, Branstrom, etc.

Pettersson
Heiskanen
Glass
Makar
Chytil

Jesus H Christ, CBJ up 2-0 already just 4 mins in. I would have been stunned if they had lost in seven games, but to get swept???

As a Ranger fan, since TB is costing us the conditional first we could have gotten from them, I hope they lose in historic and embarrassing fashion.
I was just thinking this sweep could work out for you anyway if TB looks to shake things up, they have an elite forward in Stamkos and you have the assets to get him.

Nah, the Rangers have a infusion of real good young talent coming. They are the Rangers, so they will take a run at Panarin who only costs $$$.

The only thing I can see them trading significant assets for at this point in the rebuild is a defenseman like Trouba.

But it would so be the Rangers thing to do. But this is post-Sather.

Still a long shot of getting another first rounder if Dallas makes the conference finals (Zucc trade).

The “Ranger thing to do” that scares me is them throwing a 7 year contract at Erik Karlsson.

I would like this post, but I can't.

So, I agree with the post. Hope they stay far away from Karlsson. Despite his talent, he won't bring what is needed to Broadway. He would greatly improve the PP though.

Rangers should have taken Mittlelstadt that year.
I haven't been greatly impressed with Middlestadt so far. The guy a lot of fans at the time thought the Rangers should take, who looked great for a while but then had a bad back injury and may never pan out, was Gabe Vilardi.

My biggest problem with the Rangers getting Karlsson is that his best years would be now (when the Rangers are still growing), and there is a good chance he is declining and his contract becoming a problem right during the time period you are hoping to be a true contender.
