LOL. When was there a crash that killed as many people here in the US as there was as the DC crash? Last time was beginning of 09.
As usual, the same people left a mess that the adults had to clean. Same thing going on now, with a new recession on the way to boot.
I get emails from United regularly about them in fact adding flights.
A few examples as of late last year....so this seems inaccurate.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Wednesday it’s taking “immediate steps” to improve operations at Newark Liberty International Airport, including accelerating technological updates and increasing air traffic control staffing.
The FAA has slowed arrivals and departures at Newark as a result of runway construction and staffing and technology issues at Philadelphia TRACON, which processes radar data transmitted from the New York-based STARS system to guide aircraft in and out of Newark.
Many of the steps announced address the reliability of the connection between the two cities.
The FAA announced it would add three new high-bandwidth telecommunications connections between the Philadelphia TRACON and the New York-based STARS — to improve “speed, reliability and redundancy” — and would replace the copper telecommunications connections with updated fiberoptic technology for “greater bandwidth and speed.”
The FAA also announced it would establish a STARS hub at the Philadelphia TRACON so the latter “does not depend on a telecommunications feed from the New York STARS hub.”
The FAA also announced Wednesday it would address the staffing shortages. There are 22 fully certified controllers at the Philadelphia TRACON, which handles Newark traffic, and 21 controllers and supervisors in training. Ten of those 21 trainees are “receiving on-the-job training,” according to the FAA, and all 10 are certified on at least one position.
“We have a healthy pipeline with training classes filled through July 2026,” the FAA said.

Some helpful advice here. So far, the red-eye flights from PHX to EWR this week all left on time and arrived on time or early. Hoping for the best!

copper wiring & still using floppy disks, this is idiotic & why has it not been addressed in the past 20 or more years?
Appears good steps are being taken by the FAA to address these issues impacting EWR.
Next logical question to ask is how many other facilities throughout the country rely on the same antiquated equipment? FAA needs to evaluate that and make similar improvements.
Probably part of the reason why it’s such a high stress job.

Found something they said on the radio interesting yesterday FAA is sending managers to Newark to help with the shortage. But despite being managers they are a few weeks from being ready to work at Newark. Apparently, due to congestion, layout, etc etc it's not just a place you can show up and work regardless of experience.

Knowing that most of you are Rutgers grads, the inability to critically think through complex situations is really disappointing but not at all unexpected at this point.

It's not that complex. The systems were antiquated and the can kicked down the road until the last guy completely let the rope drop.
Now it's going to get fixed, but like most things, it's preceded by some pain. I'd avoid ERW at all costs.

I fly 1-2 times/month on average
Not doing EWR, unless it's a really early morning flight out, until this gets settled

It seems like the flights out of EWR have less issues than in.
If I didn’t rely on United for their perks and points, I would opt for Philly.

No jinx, please. The red-eye from PHX to EWR has landed early or on time every day in the past week. We fly out tonight. Planning another trip out of EWR in early June, will take the 6:30 a.m. out and red-eye home. Problems build up starting now (9 a.m.) (45 minute delay for outbound currently and increasing). Have another flight next weekend back and forth to San Diego. Contemplating the red-eye in.
This is just my experience from flying home this past Monday from Ft. Myers, FL on United. I had a flight around noon from FL, that had a gate hold there for close to an hour, but once we were airborne we landed in Newark at Terminal A only about 35-40 minutes late, which I was grateful for.
I dropped some people off at RSW in FL early morning the day before on Sunday and they were flying wonderful Spirit into Newark. They got an alert of a 2 hour delay for their 9am flight before I even got them to the airport at 7am down there.
Flying down to FL from Newark back on 4/26 before the current situation reached this point, we had close to an hour delay leaving Newark strictly due to runway construction we were told. We boarded and taxied to the runway on time, but then the pilot told us we were #20 to leave which wound up in just sitting there for nearly an hour.

Not dying on a flight b/c of this nonsense
last nights outage blamed on telecommunications. Last weeks on "burnt copper". It's possible that neither of these outages have anything to do with the age of the system and its more of an issue with the link between ground radar and the hub in Philly. I doubt we will ever hear a good explanation.
Cracks me up when I hear people like Schumer saying he can't believe they are still using copper, as if fiber never gets hit with a backhoe, or an electrical component at either end never glitches.

Base on what I just saw on TV, there are hundreds of these blackouts across the country a year, not as long as the recent one at Newark. It may have more to due with the recent cut in support staff instead of the equipment.
It appears 2 hubs - NY and Philly (TRACON) cover everything from Maryland to NY. Moving EWR and a few smaller NJ airport control to Philly control eased staffing issues at the NY TRACON. This just happened last July.
My son did the same for his upcoming travel to the west coast. He now has to make a connection instead of flying direct but he did not want to deal with EWR. Evidently finding flights out of LGA is getting harder as the demand increases.
Supposedly the proposal to move EWR to Philly from Long Island was first discussed years ago and the ATC union fought it. The Philly location is still staffed significantly below desired levels and the data has flow from LI which is another potential point of system failure.
