OT: New Whiskey Recommendation

Picked up a bottle today of something I have wanted to try for a long time. Laws 4 Grain Straight Bourbon out of Denver. Lots of flavor. Very robust in all kinds of directions. First glimpse is half Whistlepig and half Weller. Sweet, fruity, vanilla, and very peppery considering it's only 10% rye. If you like something that has some kick, give Laws 4 Grain a shot if you are bored. It's not cheap at $59.95, but it doesn't taste like everything else, so there's that.

Have not tried it. The standard whiskey prices out here are great, but anything the least bit off the mainstream is absurd. Glenmorangie is pretty standard in my book but it’s priced 50% higher than GA, NC, NV - the three places I’ve bought it recently. Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Maker’s, etc. are all really cheap, though. I’m thinking about crossing the border to see if Idaho is any better options because it’s slim pickings here

I have always leaned a little more towards the Balcones products for American single malt since it was so cheap when I lived in Texas, but Stranahans does a nice job though... Laws is something completely different. It's like apples and brisket stuffed bacon wrapped jalapenos. I read a comp that Stranahans is for after a day on the slopes in Aspen... Laws is for a after a day of free climbing at Garden if the Gods sitting by the campfire.

The head distiller from Stranahans left to start Laws up after Stranahan's sold to Proximo (the Jose Cuervo family.) I hate recommending a $50-60 bottle that's so different, because I could see some people not liking it... So if if you can get a sample somewhere, please do.

Was seeing $80 for that at multiple stores in Washington. ~$50-60 was what I was used to GA. La Santa was $45 and here is $80 as well. Will check out the website, that's helpful. We go to Idaho a lot, but this will help us figure out which store to go to.

FYI if you see Glenmorangie in "Giraffe Tin, it's just a cool box for the bottle. Looks like La Santa is in Post Falls for $49.95 in the Giraffe Tin.

ETA. Met one of my neighbors the other day. He has a boat access only cabin in Hells Canyon and a Jet Boat. He doesn't rent it out, but was kinda offering it up over drinks. I will let you know if it comes to fruition for next summer... I am not going to take the wife and kids and sure as hell don't want to go alone.

Anyone had Stellum or George Remus bourbon? My local store has both on the shelf. Worth spending the money?

Remus has two mash bills, one is 20% rye and the other is 35% rye I believe. I haven't had Remus (I get headaches like the devil from anything over 15%ish rye, but I love the spice... Kinda why I was so excited about the Laws last night at only 10% rye, tasted like 30%) myself, but I have heard good things. It's MGP's push into their own brand and they have been a great distillery for other labels (Angels Envy, Bulleit, High West, Smooth Ambler and others.) If the price is right its worth a shot.. If you like Angel's Envy, I think you may be into Remus.

I know nothing about Stellum, but after reading their website, its basically a blended bourbon (MGP) again. 2 high rye mash bills (Likely the same 2 as the Remus from MGP) and one mash bill that is 99% corn. I haven't gotten into blended bourbons yet myself out of fear of getting that splitting rye headache. Other blended bourbons I know of are Breckenridge, Fistful of Bourbon, and Old Elk.

Why I never... If I remember correctly that was syrup I sent you. Apparently in a U-Haul moving box. Funny enough, I used my friends address as the return address apparently. Who needs enemies, right?

Where in God’s name did you see that much Weller on the shelf? I have only been able to buy two bottles in the last 5 years. Here in Mid TN it’s as if it were as rare as Pappys

Not available around here, but Big Horn Bourbon, made in Montana is very nice. Just got back from Jackson Hole and had to pick up several bottles for family members. Really smooth and a bit sweet.

Haven't tried it. It's always in stock though. I cant find a mash bill on the rye percentage. If you had to pick a bourbon it tastes like which of the 3 would you pick:

4 Roses Single Barrel or Basil Hayden's (High Rye)

Knob Creek (Medium Rye)

Buffalo Trace (Low Rye)

Big Horn won our blind tasting a few years back. It stands up very well compared to many of the high dollar bourbons.

Agree, it’s very smooth and easy drinking.

Found a Heaven Hill 7 year on the shelf this morning, which I can’t remember seeing in state before.
