I know there has been a New Orleans thread on here before, but I can't find it in search. DS, do you have a way of locating those old threads...I may just be searching wrong.

I'm looking for some suggestions for a good place to stay in New Orleans. I'm trying to plan a little last minute trip with the wife for next weekend. She likes shopping of course, and I'd like to find some good restaurants and may stop by Harrahs for a little while. I haven't been down there many times, but seems like one time we stayed on a street with tons of little shops and restaurants that was somewhat close to Harrahs? I may be wrong on that though.

figured maybe some of the pack would be able to guide me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Im a big fan of the Royal Sonesta. It's in the middle of the quarter. My fav restaurant down here Atchafalya. It's in midtown/Garden District. Very underrated part of NOLA.

I would say, find a street that you can take the bus or trolley. Will save you a lot of money on your trip.

I like to stay about 2 miles away from the French Quarter. We usually stay on St. Charles or Magazine(some cool little stores). Prytania has some nice places as well.

Next weekend regardless of where you stay, you can probably negotiate a good deal. The Mardi Gras crap will be over and done with.

When I go to Saints games I try to stay at the Marriott. Really nice and most of the times they have a deal. Back in the day we used to stay at the LaQuenta which is a lot nicer than most LaQuentas and its really close to everything you want to visit in NOLA.

P.S. If you don't eat at The Camellia Grill I won't ever be you message board friend ever again. Get a chocolate freeze.

Royal Sonesta is great. It's where I stay most of the time. The last couple of times I've been I stayed at the Astor Crown Plaza. Very nice and located on the corner of Bourbon and Canal.

Use Priceline. And do a little homework on the biddingfortravel yuku forum. They have great lists of the hotels in each district and star rating, so you'll know what your options are before bidding. Plus youcan see what other people have been bidding and getting. Just bid on high star hotels in the district you want, and you'll be in good shape. I bet you will be able to get a steal.

I stayed at the renaissance arts last time down there for about 60/night using that trick. Don't be scared of priceline. I used to be... But it is PERFECT for a last minute Nola trip.

He is right on the freeze. Also, go all out & get the "chefs special omelet". You will eat like a boss. My other dinner rec is kind of an under the radar place. Trust me, go eat at Coop's Place. It's not expensive and it's the best jumbalaya in N.O. Really, everything is good. It's named after a death row inmate at Angola who ordered a very detailed last meal to put off the chair as long as possible. Coop's is awesome

Lunch at Commanders - 3 courses for $30 - and worth it
St Joe's Bar - blueberry mojito - close to a bunch of the shops on magazine
Willie Mae's or Dookie Chase for fried chicken

When I was down there in November, all of John Besh's restaurants had good happy hour specials. I went with Luke, half price wells and 50 cent oysters.

John Besh can do no wrong. All if his restaurants are awesome.

And if you go to Luke, get the pork shank.

Willie Mae's is the best fried chicken this side if heaven.

Check out R&O's up in Bucktown/Lakeview for no frills fried seafood and po-boys. It's not in the middle of all the nightlife, but consistently has really good food.

Also, apologies to Missouridawg, but beignets are amazing. One of the few things locals and tourists agree on. Just can't get the same outside of NOLA.

Royal sonesta if you don't mind blowing $, otherwise I suggest stay bridge. You can find slightly closer for equal $, but at less quality. Edge of walking distance, but two blocks from harrah's so easy to get a cab. Right next to mother's.

The key understanding is to take online ratings, and subtract at least a star.

My wife and I are doing the same. Just booked a weekend room at Le pavilion. I've stayed there before. Good place to take the wife. And rooms were a lot less than other mainstays we checked. (Monteleone, Roosevelt, Sonesta, etc.). It's on Poydras so not in the quarter but only about a 3 block walk.

Hilton Riverfront but suggest a room on the plaza, not the main building. You are right on the river and can watch the boats, plus you can walk straight down the steps into the riverwalk.

Restaurants:
- Maspero's for poboys
- Gumbo shop for well...anything
- Muffaleta's...most suggest Central Grocery but I go right next door, can't remember the name but I find them better.
- Port of Call -
- Acme Oyster House - oysters benadict
- Juans Flying Burrito - it's on Magazine out of the quarters but it's just fun to go to.
