It's a long season and every team has its highs and lows. Nobody dominates the season from end to end. As long as they are playing well in February and start peaking the second half of March, they can make some real noise in the playoffs. I didn't expect them to be as competitive this year so it's a pleasant surprise, like the Yanks were in the summer. Still, defense is the weakness, and my biggest gripe with Shero thus far is still the lack of defense. He is only interested in signing scoring defensemen. We need a couple of stay at home guys. What the Devils always had when successful was three defensive parings that had a defensive minded guy paired with a puck mover, Stevens and Nieds, Daneyko and Rafalski or Albelin and Driver. Just a couple examples off the top of my head. The names and pairings changed over the years, but the fact that every pairing had a stay at home defenseman was always a hallmark of the D in front of Marty.

Can’t win in the nhl relying on offense. And Schneider is probably the most overrated goalie in the league. (Though as I admit he has no defense in front of him).

A flawed team for sure.[/QUOTE]

No arguing this. The team’s defensemen aren’t the greatest. Disagree with calling Cory overrated though. He’s a top 12 goalie at worst and definitely solid enough. He was standing on his head for basically 2 straight weeks about a month ago, making phenomal top-quality saves and saving their asses en route to 5 or 6 straight wins. It’s safe to say there are no niedermayers, stevens, or daneykos on this team and it’s a tough ask for Cory or anyone to be perfect when they’re facing 35+ shots a night!

This team has SERIOUS issues on D and looked disorganized from the start last night. Other than Hall, Hischier and Bratt (really all season) the rest were a mess. The bye week did no favors for the Devils, or Rangers for that matter.

It’s the new uniform. The thicker stripes are heavier and it’s starting to wear on the players.

I may have a harsher than normal view on Corey, admittedly. I guess decades of watching the GOAT in Marty, his replacement will never live up to expectations. Either way better defense should help

Maroon for ? Stafford? Grabner getting close to breaking out.

Nico Hall Palmieri clear number not changing, other combos will change until coach finds what he like likes best. Many options and good problem to have !!

So the Devils beat Pittsburgh in a 7:00 pm game and the Star Ledger and the Daily Record have no coverage of the game.

So lets see: New Jersey has no Network Affiliates and now we have no newspapers that cover New Jersey sports. Wonderful.

Game was over before 9:40. No excuses not to have anything.

No clue if it was in physical paper or not, but Ledger has a beat writer full time. His articles are always on nj.com, guess they don’t publish in paper though. Week.

Bergen Record also has s full time beat writer. Daily Record doesn’t, nor do the other Gannett papers in NJ. Weak.

Big win. They said something last night that the Pens had won their last 17 home games.

Only two points behind the Pens for third in the Met with a game in hand. 9 point cushion for a playoff spot.

And Taylor Hall just keeps scoring. Schneider played in Binghamton so he’s on his way back.

Devils vs Everybody

Never realized, but Keith Kinkaid is a bit of a nut, right? His Twitter is insane and saw him laughing with the ref (I think it was the ref) late in the third last night.

Hall has played out of his mind this whole season but especially in 2018. There are quite a few scenarios right now that would have the Devils playing Pittsburgh in the first round. Pitt is a great team (and has a great shot to at least make the conference finals), but the Devils seem to be able to match up well with them this year.

Great win on the road against a formidable opponent

The next game @ Florida should be really interesting too. They are not out of the playoff race and have been playing excellent lately (and have Luongo back now).

That’s s great matchup for the Devils. And truthfully a great matchup for the league. Would be an exciting, fast paced skilled series.

Just want them to clinch before worrying about who they play, though. Still not a definite Devils even make it.

I like Schneider as a person & team player, but he gives up too many soft goals IMO. I think that Kinkaid is more solid. Lovejoy on D coughs up too many. And #45 Sami V. on D was terrible for the two periods that I saw last night.

Vatanen has been a great addition. Agree about Lovejoy. Not s fan.

Kinkaid has been great recently but went thru stretch in middle of season he was horrendous. Will definitely feel more comfortable with Schneider back healthy.

Cory Schneider has the fourth best save percentage of all-time. Kinkaid has been reliable lately, but Schneider is definitely better.

You are free to have that opinion, but wow are you in the absolute minority with that thinking.
Lost his two games since returning. Let in soft goals in both. Doesn't control rebounds. Nice guy, team player, but not a shut down goalie.

I think he’s lost his last 9 starts.

Not good.

Team is definitely not a playoff team right now.

Was there last night. Vegas is stacked. They have size and speed. Fleury is playing lights out.
We are playing like the young team that we are right now. It happens. We can go from losing 4 in a row to playing like the best team in hockey.
The future is really bright.

Schneider has lost 9 straight?

Why do they keep trotting him out there?

Looks as if the Devils season collapsed from a month ago.

I thought they would make the playoffs.

The other two goalies haven’t exactly been lights out, either.

As great as Shero has been, the Devils are all offense. Even their defensemen are offensive minded. Never addressed that and don’t have a shutdown defender. Hence the goalies are struggling.

They have by far the toughest remaining schedule in the league. Not looking good. Would be a major collapse. But future is still very bright regardless. Just need defense

So I'm not sure why I'm choosing to bump this thread now (maybe I'm a glutton for punishment) but it would sure seem like the Devils are headed towards missing the playoffs as they begin this trip of death out west.

Probably need to win at least 8 of the remaining 14 games. I just don't see it happening.

Goaltending really killed this team.

Just the first of 6 tough games on the road. It was a great win tonight. One of their problems is playing up or down to their competition. They beat the Pens on the road to end their 11 game unbeaten streak at home, tonight they beat Nashville on the road to end their 10 game winning streak, and they recently beat Tampa on the road but they cant beat Ottawa. WTF!

Kinkaid should be the #1. Good start to the road trip.. hopefully, this gives them the confidence to win at least 3 more before they are back home. Playoff race is tight, gonna be close. The Panthers have to play the Bruins four times still, 3 of those games in the last 8 days of the season.

Big win, way to go, boys!

5 point cushion for a playoff spot and don’t look now but they’re just as far away from the Caps and Pens for first place in the Met.

Tough six game west coast road trip has the potential to change the Devils playoff picture for the worse. 2 for 2 so far though. Keep the legs fresh, fellas.

Was at the game last night in Vegas. Surprisingly large Devils presence there. Kinkaid played very well, but Hischer was the star of the Devils.

Don't be fooled by the 5 point lead -- Florida is red hot and has played 3 less games. Devils need to keep winning to ensure a playoff spot, and WC1 (or 3rd in Metro) would be a lot better than WC2 and having to play Tampa to start the playoffs.
