My back porch and deck are apparently very desirable places for mosquitoes. 2 questions... 1. what about the professionally installed systems i.e. who installs them, expense and effectiveness 2. anyone know any good products that they`ve used themselves that really work

I use the Thermacell for hunting and have used it in my backyard when I have people over for cooking out. I'm guessing you want something larger than that and that is installed. Until you have the new system though, Thermacell is a very good quick fix. During turkey season or early bow season, I won't hunt without it.

The only thing I don't like is if you have too much of a breeze, it is basically useless. At least mosquitos aren't as bad in higher wind scenarios.

The misting systems work very well. You form a perimeter or zone that you want to protect. Comes on 2 or 3 times a day, they will have a remote that you can use also before you go out. Average backyard with a nozzle every 10ft, would start around $3000. They also help with flies, wasp, and etc.You can check www.mistaway.com .

I see no one mentioning the propane catchers. Was hoping to see something good or bad about them.

You are so right sir. Therma Cell. Get the latern, Don't know how much you cook out or stay on your porch, but it works great.

I bought one a couple years back and it worked okay, but not to the level that I was hoping. I've heard really good things about Terminix's patented system, but the monthly cost is pretty high. It works by putting a chemical in a date based (invented in Israel) food source that renders the females unable to lay eggs.

My sister in law lives a couple of miles from us and uses Terminix. We were over there yesterday afternoon and last night before the monsoon started and spent most of the time on her deck. 4 people = not one single bite. Cost about $50 per month but very very effective. I`m going to try to get out cheaper than that but it was impressive for sure.

That's a good bit cheaper than when I checked it last year, but still kinda pricey. I'll stick to the Cutter backyard that hooks to the hose until that Terminix price comes down a little more. I used the Cutter last year and it worked well for about 3-weeks (label says 6, but it wears off after 3 or so). Try the Cutter, it is a cheap option and really cuts back on the numbers. If you try it, don't follow the instructions and turn on the water before you open the valve. The valve that starts the flow is cheap and the water pressure can render it useless. Hook the hose up, go ahead and open the valve, and then have your wife turn the spigot on. Again, I've had good success with it and I live less than 500-ft from the edge of the Pascagoula River marsh and have woods on 2 sides so they're usually bad.
