Hard to believe the Portland Trailblazers fired their announcer because of 3 tweets he made when he was 15, 14 years ago. When he was 15!

The tweets were stupid and mean but come on….they literally have Morant on the roster who threatened people with a gun.

Be that as it may, you don’t sore the guy! You ask him to delete the tweets, publicly apologize, go to sensitivity training and do community service. Teachable moment not a job ending offense!

But what should expect out of Portlandia?

It is ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as the FCC chairman threatening to take away broadcast licenses because of jokes by a talk show host about the President, or using the leverage of a merger approval to get another talk show host removed because he stated that the settlement of a frivilous lawsuit against his network was a bribe.

It's ridiculous...but it IS Portland...can't say mean words there!

exactly my thoughts - Portland overreacting to mean words. Shocker!!!

yes it’s ridiculous. Being held accountable for what he did as a stupid 15 year old kid.

but it’s also lesson learned about how what you put out can stay out there.

not sure how twitter (x?) works but if there’s a chance to get rid of old posts he’s a friggin moron for leaving those up there considering he’s a public figure ….. in Portland

Yes it is ridiculous

almost as ridiculous as the president of the United States banning networks that don’t spoon feed his propaganda to the public

The "whatabouts" now begin. This should definitely go over to the CE board.

the guy was supposed to be the spokesperson/announcer and had the job for a few hours. It was an oops on the screening process, not dismissal of a beloved employee. Excessive baggage. next. You should pay for CE and take this there. They sound like your people. I would pay to never see that cesspool.

A Mercer County town paid off and dismissed a police officer immediately after hiring him because they learned he was some kind of go go dancer.

Cancel culture is crazy and 9-10 the accounts complaining about his old tweets the most are bots. Who is going back 15 years on newly hired Portland trailblazer announcers Social media? A bot that's who that's a task for an AI agent, social media and online forums are filled with bots and trolls just attempting to cause fear, uncertainty or doubt. This is what the algorithm thrives on and humans are so gullible that we fall for it every time. Everything is presented in a way to piss someone off, division has been incentivized. I'm sure you learned about this canceling from some guy on socials that was pissed and telling you why you should be pissed. Similar to the anti welfare ad that has come under scrutiny...lol these posts are designed to play with your emotions..

A distant cousin of mine was murdered in Portland by gang bangers 4 or 5 years ago. Was in wrong place at wrong time. Police never solved it because they are so overwhelmed with drug and gang violence. Imagine that.
Just horrible. Sadly the priorities of the police there don't seem to be about solving real crime. Hopefully some day they catch them.

I agree on all sides cancel culture is dangerous and usually not warranted

That’s is a big difference to have a police officer with that background and firing a 29 yr old Becasue of 3 stupid tweets when he was 15. Come on.

how much would it cost to rehabilitate the image of your day old employee who has made racist and sexist comments and also rehabilitate the image of the $4 billion sports entertainment, organization that hired him as the face of the organization? probably too much.

it cost this town a lot.

You responded to the wrong part. Is what he said about the guy being hired for hours correct?

Because that isn't "cancel culture" and definitely isn't worth getting worked up about from thousands of miles away.

Also, 100 percent a misplaced CE post.

When I read about this I thought if he had killed someone at 15 he would have been "rehabilitated" and the record sealed. Trailblazers are a disgrace.

Well since this hasn’t been moved to the CE board as it absolutely should be and everyone is commenting, I will add my $.02. Anyone getting fired from a job or not getting hired for a job for anything they wrote or said as a teenager is absurd. This is the world that has been created by social media. I’m glad I grew up 50 years ago. No computers, no cameras, no social media. As a 68 year old with 2 sons I am concerned about the future. I’m very concerned about the current political situation and the contempt shown for constitutional democracy by the executive branch of the federal government. I’m also very concerned that the great American ideals of fairness, equality, decency and openess are on the wane. Empires don’t last forever and the American empire is in crises. Clinging to mythology, nostalgia and romanticizing of the past isn’t going to “save” anything.

yeah. Absolutely agree. America is f$&ked.

honestly BOTH extremes being discussed here are signs of it - the super woke cancel culture stuff is an example on one end AND the leader of a democracy trying to suppress free press.

BOTH very corrosive

Sounds like a case of consequences for your actions.
(searching about this issue found this )
>Under the National Basketball Association's policy framework, team employees are subject to strict standards of conduct regarding racial discrimination, hate speech, and social media presence. The NBA handles past hateful or racist social media messages through a combination of league-wide governance and individual franchise enforcement:
The NBA and its constituent franchises maintain a zero-tolerance policy for racist, sexist, or otherwise harmful comments. If an employee's past hateful social media messages come to light—even if they were posted years prior or during the individual's teenage years—teams routinely move to terminate employment immediately
Hateful or racist rhetoric is explicitly categorized as conduct prejudicial to the game. This authority was famously used to issue a lifetime ban and a forced team sale against former owner Donald Sterling following the leak of private, racially charged remarks<

So Portland followed league policy and there's really nothing to whine about or claim it's part of the City's culture, unless you feel racism is not all bad .
Braiden Bell just was a victim of his own making!!
Past or present what you do might someday come back and bite you in your butt.

Come on. Calm down. 3 tweets from a 15 yr old. 15! He apologizes, go to training, speak at events. Done. Move on.

There is a line between cancel culture and employment at will. Sometimes it's a fine line, but it's there.

We can debate whether the Blazers were right in doing what they did. But I don't think there is any debate about their right to do it.
Of course they can fire anybody they want is somebody actually saying they weren’t allowed to fire him?
