I'd agree with you in this way. If they chose him to sit most of the time--and I'd probably amend that to mean well more than 50% of the time--I'd agree with you. But I expecdt him to get ABs and, if he hits, get even more.

Other than maybe giving Lindor a day off I don’t see how he gets any consistent at-bats. Does Mendoza use him as a late game defensive replacement at 3rd for Bichette while Bo is still settling in to the spot?

Smart business for both. For the player- it is guaranteed very good money during his "controlled" years. For the Pirates- they lock him up and even though it may seem like a lot of money now- it saves in the long run. And again, back to the player- who knows what happens in collective bargaining.

You are right- is Pedro crazy- The Met's are a clutch hitting, fundamentally sound, run prevention machine. The Met's also want to be a team full of controllable players or contracts with opt outs except for the ones that Stearns was forced to take.

It is a very clear identity...

He implied that management doesn't want strong personalities as that is in direct conflict with management's control of the team. Usually dominant players run the team and get others to play well. Putting a team together is not like legos. You can't snap them together and think they follow the manager's wish.

Beltran talked about how Pedro helped him when he arrived in NY and about Pedro's impact on those Mets. Leaders lead and followers look lost without guidance. Management is not in the dugout during the heat of the battle.

This is the kind of gamble that small market teams have to make, and teams like the Mets don't. The Cohen mindset is, let the kid play out his controllable years, and when the time comes for me to out bid everybody, I'll do that - if I so choose.
