OT: Mayhew Junction Brewery

I went to one of their open tours/ beer tastings over the weekend. I really enjoyed it, and would encourage anyone else in the Starkville area to check it out if you enjoy microbrews.

They had 10-12 different beers on tap and a few really good ones. They are going to start distributing to the Starkville area very soon as well.

I personally think this type of thing is really good for Starkville, and I will do everything I can to support them. I really hope they are successful

It is in the Old Wasson building, right across the street from the Cappes location and right next to the Starkville Athletic Club.

I think they are only doing tours on the weekend right now, but im not exactly sure of times and dates. They usually keep their twitter account pretty up to date with all of that information though.

To my fellow Mississippians, we need to all contact our legislators and tell them to get off their lazy arses, quit hanging out in the back pockets of the beer distributors and legalize beer sales at these breweries. The bill this year died in committee meaning the brewery lobby wrote some checks to some senators and reps to keep it in committee. I think it was WTVA last week that said MS is last state not to legalize sales at the brewery. Fvcking last again!

All the microbreweries in Texas banded together to sue the state of Texas over their version of the same law a few years back and they won. Now they're doing it again to make it where they can sell directly to consumers instead of going through a distributor.

Mississippi obviously doesn't have any breweries to sue the state, but I bet you could find some special interests.

In many ways, this was a result of warring lobbies -- the breweries on the one hand, and the distributors on the other. The breweries represent a much smaller and newer industry in Mississippi than the distributors, as you can imagine given the history of brewing in the state.

If you'd like to help, contact Raise Your Pints, the group that got the homebrewing ban lifted and the ABV ceiling raised. They've been active in the on-site-sales fight and I imagine they'd be happy to help you voice your displeasure to the appropriate civil servant.

Yeah, the Stars and Bars is a conquered flag---the British Union Jack is really made of the conquered flags of their neighbors---the huge problem with our state flag is the fact that the KKK adopted the flag. Whenever a hate group adopts a symbol, it is doomsday for the symbol.

RYP has been critically important to getting many of our beer related laws changed, but most of the issues impacting the industry now are manufacturer issues and not necessarily consumer issues.

The MBG has a very close relationship with RYP, but this on premises sales initiative is now an initiative of Mississippi based breweries.

Whenever a hate group adopts a symbol, it is doomsday for the symbol.

It goes both ways. Something starts as "vulgar" and then becomes "popular". Then the symbol adapts/adjusts, means different things in different contexts (e.g., words like "mean" or "wind"), loses its historical significance, or disappears from contemporary society.

There are now over 105 breweries in Virginia, 35 in Hampton Roads alone, that employ hundreds and bring in millions.

These breweries have become gathering places, to meet, relax and enjoy a better beer. The irony is .. the more that the craft breweries have prospered, the more the distributers have ALSO prospered. It's not a zero sum gain.

Smartmouth Brewing Company opened in Norfolk and is now expanding its capacity by 75% to keep up with demand.

Stone Brewing just opened in Richmond overlooking the James River. They built a 200,000 square-foot $74M production brewery, packaging hall, retail store and its administrative offices. Stone will employ more than 288 people. The destination restaurant, Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, on 14 acres, will open in about a year, featuring beautifully landscaped gardens where visitors will be able to enjoy craft beer, dine and relax in an inviting atmosphere.
