So… good news and bad news from my latest bloodwork.

Good news: My A1C is down to 5.7. It was 10.9 back in July. Diet, exercise, and metformin seems to have done the job so far.

Bad news: My cholesterol is still high, 204 total and 136 LDL, so my doctor wants to prescribe me 10 mg daily atorvastatin, which is also known as Lipitor.

Anybody have any experience with Lipitor? Side effects? Success?

I’m supposed to have my follow-up here shortly, so I’d love to hear any experiences.

I’ve had slightly elevated levels over the past several years and my Dr has put me on Crestor a couple of times. I can’t stand statins.

I have had to take myself off of them twice and have told my Dr no more. They cause me to have annoying groin pain. It’s not like a throbbing, but almost like a gentle kick in the nuts. It especially flared up at night and caused me many many sleepless nights. Couldn’t do it anymore and said I was done with it.

204 is not high for overall. The thing is everybody’s body is different. Now my late sister had high overall cholesterol around 290-300. She at a sweet potato and oat meal everyday for about a year and lowered it under 200.
man I wouldn’t take meds for cholestero, just saying.

I’ve been taking atorvastatin for several years. Prob 5 or 6.

I haven’t noticed anything.

I took Lipitor just over a month. Had noticeable weight gain, , wanted to eat all the time, like at 2AM, (which I NEVER do.)
Dr. said I was crazy. I went to Crestor, no problems.
Cholesterol...125 this week.

I agree. If it's anywhere close to that normal range, I'd skip those drugs and try to do as much as I can with lifestyle changes and just live with it.

This! And fast 24-48 hours every 3-4 month. Do a 72+ is you can.
I think that is good advice my wife has RA, she controls it with her diet. She got tested for foods and ingredient, it’s amazing as she had it but now it’s under control. She is eats organic and gluten free mostly. Just saying.

Yes. I've been taking Lipitor for years. At first, I think it may have caused some joint pain (or that may have been my imagination). But it works. There are also alternative medications if you have side effects that you can't live with, but generic Lipitor is probably the most widely used. It keeps my cholesterol in check.

That's quite a reduction in A1C. Mine was 6 last time, and I've not been really good about my intake so in a month I'm not sure what to expect.

Haha. I never had that problem with statins. Ankle pain was about it.

Took it for a while then the leg cramps started in middle of the night. Made me feel rough. I was on a higher dose because my family genetics hold the undisputed championship for cholesterol. Both sister’s couldn’t handle statins either. Now on Repatha injectable every 2 weeks. Would recommend asking your cardiologist about adding Ezetimibe (generic statin) in combo with whatever other statin (lipitor, crestor or Repatha) you can handle. Studies show this combination immediately reduces all-cause mortality by up to 49%. God Bless.

That is what mine did. Started out as groin pain, then radiated downward almost like restless leg. Couldn’t sleep at all when it fired up

I took statins for 20 years. The last 5 I started having trouble with my left arm tingling like it was asleep. I stopped taking and it went away.

Was on Lipitor for years with no obvious side effects that I attributed to the drug. However I tend to get hamstring and foot cramps when dehydrated and after switching to Rosuvastatin I feel like they got much less frequent. May be completely anecdotal.

I modified my diet one year and dropped a bunch of weight and got my numbers just into the normal range trying to get off of them, but my internist asked if I wanted to make myself miserable trying to keep that up or just take 5mg and be able to eat something bad on occasion………I chose the latter🤣🤣🤣

I got put on a low dose of Lipitor about three months ago and my cholesterol dropped incredibly in a month's time. Haven't experienced any side effects that I could put a finger on.

I’ve tried Lipitor and Crestor and both made my joints ache so bad I’d rather die. I got to the point that I could not even twist the top off a coke bottle. There is a new shot available that several people I know who can’t take statins are trying. It’s an every three month shot and seems to work without the side effects of statins, at least for the two people that I know who are taking it. I can’t tell you its name.

When mine was in that range, my Dr said he didn't think I needed it unless I just wanted it. I've had it before and it caused my legs to hurt so bad I couldn't walk and seem to have memory issues. I passed this time and all my blood work improved. Heredity can't be defeated by Lipitor but eating right and exercising can help a lot.

Tried different ones most caused extremely annoying joint pain. But crestor seems to do okay with me now as long as I stay hydrated and don't drink too much. I've really cut back on any hard liquor due to several health reasons but the joint pain really flares up the next day if I have a bourbon like I used to.
Zetia I couldn't take. Really screwed with my *****. Basically makes you **** out whatever fat you eat. Like wiping a brown marker that never ends.

I’ve been on a low dose Lovastatin(Mevacor) for 20 years. My numbers are good with no side effects…..other than an occasional desire to bark at the mail lady. She’s not bad looking.

I took it for several years with no side effects. Finally got off of it about 7 months ago. My dad takes it with no side effects. My mom and my roommate from college both experienced terrible joint pain with it, so their doctors switched them to a different cholesterol med. My mom still takes a statin, just not that particular one. My roommate from college is on something different that isn’t a statin.

Get a CAC score and see if there is an issue first. You may not have an issue at all. Cholesterol attaches to damage in your arteries caused by inflammation so you can repair the damage. If there is an issue, it’s the inflammation, not the cholesterol. Drill down to what is causing the inflammation before you deplete your body of something that is used in many functions in your body. I tried Crestor because of a CAC score of 61 and it wrecked me. I couldn’t go up a flight of stairs without my legs burning. I quit statins and cut inflammatory foods out of my diet.

I have been on 40 mg of Atorvastatin for many years with no known side effects and my cholesterol is in the mid 130 range from 220 when I started. But I went through a number of statins before Atorvastatin because of some of the side effects listed in this thread. Everybody is different so work with your doctor to determine which is best for you. My results were achieved without any diet change. Life is too short to give up the pleasures of Italian and southern food.

I was very skeptical about this, but my old country doc told me to get liquid cod liver oil (emphasis on liquid, no caplets) and take it every day. I went from about 229 to 135, and my triglycerides also went down from 175 to 120. It took about 90 days between tests to get this data. I stopped taking it because life got in the way and forgot, and on my recent lipid panel, my numbers had gone way back up to where they were. I'm a believer, and no side effects. You've got to get a good quality cod liver. This is the one I used; it only stays fresh for about 45 days

Carlson - Cod Liver Oil 1100 mg Omega-3s Plus Vitamins A & D3 - Wild Caught EPA DHA Omega 3 Supplement - Norwegian Arctic, Sustainably Sourced Nordic Fish Oil Liquid, Unflavored, 250 mL (8.4 Fl Oz)

All the statins are appropriate to try. 10mg is actually a piddly dose; I probably would’ve started it higher.
It may not have the direct plaque clearing effect as Lipitor, but if you try the cod liver oil, yes, the Norwegian is a good choice. I’ve heard the lemon flavor is pretty good.
