I was there. Honestly, that first inning gave me a sinking feeling - letting Scherzer off the hook there is the kind of thing that you really just can't do. And Niese was a disaster (not to mention that Collins pulled him too late).
But Williams still seems to be managing out of some kind of paint by numbers book. He had two chances to pinch hit for a struggling Scherzer in the 5th with runners at 2nd and 3rd thanks to the Torres injury, but didn't have anyone up in the bullpen so didn't have that option. And in the 7th, he didn't seem to be thinking about the actual match ups or situation, but just that he needed to do lefty-right-lefty-righty - like he'd get extra credit for using up his bullpen. (And this is not even to mention that Williams played the infield in with one out in the first inning - I mean, really.)
Collins had his moments, too - leaving Niese in too long and putting someone making his first ML appearance of the year up against Harper (which obviously worked), but Williams seems to have learned nothing at all in close to 2 years of managing.
The next 2 pitching match ups seem better for the Mets, but we'll see.
