And the Cardinals -- and even the Nats. The Mets are young, good and improving. But these other teams are good too -- even the Nats, if they can get out of their own way. And the Mets might not be there just yet. The NL is top heavy, and the top has some talented teams.
While the Mets have struggled against both the Bucs and Cubs they are about even with the Cards at 3-4. Not to mention that the Cubs have a bunch of pups. No telling how they will respond under the glare of the postseason.

Why is O'Flaherty pitching? And we have Carlos Torres in the wings?

How many chances is O'Flaherty going to get? I understand he was lights out in 2011, but he has a 12 ERA (not a typo) with the Mets. Wouldn't this be a good time to audition someone else for a middle relief job??

Big spot in Nats-Padres game a short time ago. Nats were down 4 but had crept within one on a bases loaded single by Harper. Next batter up was Escobar and the crowd was going crazy as the count grew to 3-0. Swinging 3-0 Escobar hit into an inning ending DP. Still two innings to go but what a big spot.

When you are up 6-0 you have to be able to use the rest of your bullpen. Only way to figure out if these guys can contribute is to give them a shot. You can ask the same guy to pitch every game. I am sure TC did not want to use Clippard or Familia tonight but you can't get on him for using O'Flaherty and Torres and hope that they can do their job. I think Verrett is available starting tomorrow and Robles should be good after a night off. September will allow for a couple more arms to get a shot. 6.5 is a beautiful number right now. Niese against Harang tomorrow.

Yeah, if you can't put Flaherty on the mound up 6-0 in the 8th, you will never use him as more than a lefty specialist. That's really what he should be, but no issue trying to get an inning out of him tonight.

6.5 games up... don't pinch me, if it is a dream, I don't want to wake up!

Team scoring on the season: Mets are up to #19 with 511 runs. Only six runs behind the Dodgers and ten behind the Cubs, too.

Among pitchers with at least 100 IP this year, ERA leaders:

#6 Jacob deGrom 2.29 (tied with Kershaw)
#10 Matt Harvey 2.57
#24 Noah Syndergaard 3.19

Of course, the Dodgers have Greinke at #1 with a 1.67 ERA. Amazing season.

The Cardinals have four in the top 18: Michael Wacha (#13), Carlos Martinez (#14), John Lackey (#16), and Lance Lynn (#18).

This LA/SF thing is torture. Want LA to keep winning to fend off a team that has 3 rings in 5 years. And yet of course me wants the home-field in NLDS. :(

What a luxury to be adding maybe a G2 starter in September. Not sure what they are doing with Harvey, and if they would want him pitching 2 games in a 5 game series. If so:

G1: deGrom
G2: Matz
G3: Harvey
G4: Syndy
G5: deGrom

If no concern - pivot Harvey to G1, and move deGrom and Matz down one.

My guess is Matz comes back into the rotation for the Labor Day weekend and the Mets go to a 6 man rotation for rest of season. I don't see him as a game 2 starter in the playoffs. Probably game 4. In a 5 game first round you'd probably see:
1:deGrom
2: Harvey
3: Thor
4: Matz
5: deGrom

Niese will be in the rotation. He's been the most consistently effective starter on the staff since June. No he's not the flashiest, but a soft-throwing left-hander is the perfect fit for the Big Three flamethrowers.
G1 - deGrom
G2- Harvey
G3- Niese
G4- Syndergaard

Matz, and Colon out of the pen.

Agree, but switch Matz and Thor.

I like Matz a lot. But not enough to entrust a playoff game to him with only two major league starts.

Bad idea with Syndergaard 3rd...he has a 1-5 away record.

Thor is still learning. He has gotten hit hard quite a few times. He will lock in next year and be even better.
So why not let him learn Game 2 at Citi and let Harvey silence the away crowd? I'd rather not let a kid learn how not to get shelled in a playoff game. He can learn next year. This year is this year.

Colon will not be in the pen. He'll either be in the rotation or off the playoff roster. More likely the latter.

Gotta step on the Nats' necks now. Don't want that last weekend to matter at all. Too bad that except for @St.Louis, their schedule is about as weak as the Mets.

I think Matz is the kind of guy who can walk in and dominate this postseason. The fact that he is a lefty raises his price to boot. I'm also losing confidence in Thor...

Way too early to lose confidence in Thor. He's the youngest out of the four and he's still a thrower instead of a pitcher. Once he learns how to pitch, he'll be just as good as the others.

The Mets bats were waiting for me to get home from work. I just made it home in time for the Cespedes HR.

Cespedes! .... Movement of Mets people!
