OT: Legal zoom

Anyone used Legal Zoom for basic family estate planning ? They offer a last will, poa, and health directive package state specific for $149.

I used something similar. I'm an old bachelor so it suited my needs. If you don't have a complicated situation, it's probably okay and better than nothing.

I used it to set up a simple LLC for myself. My attorney did a simple will and health care directive for my wife and I and only charged us $75. I wouldn’t imagine being charged much more to do a POA as well.

I’m sure you will prepare the docs correctly on your own. Peace of mind is overrated.

If it’s pretty simple & not likely to be contested, you should be fine with Legal Zoom. I’ve used it for my will & to set up an LLC for my brother. If you’ve got a complex situation or contentious relatives, you probably need a good lawyer.

Question - how do you know your will is ok?

Because it’s straightforward & pretty simply. Most of my assets are in retirement plans & will pass outside the will anyway. A lot of people want to make it some mysterious complicated thing, but in a lot of cases, it’s really not.

I’ve had clients come in who set their llc up through legal zoom and legal zoom is a couple hundred dollars more than I would charge. And they set you up with a national registered agent which will cost you annually. People think it’s cheaper, but it usually isn’t.
