OT: Kia Telluride

Anyone have one? What's the feedback?

Mrs. Socks has a 2017 XC90 which is extremely nice and only has 45k, but is now out of warranty and I am starting to live in fear of the repair bills that will come one day. I also hate taking the family in it because with 2 kids in the 2nd row in booster seats, it feels cramped. We ended up taking my 1/2 ton truck everywhere because it got good mileage and had a lot more leg room to keep kids from kicking the crap out of my seat. I now have a 3/4 ton and I would rather not put as many miles on it.

Anywho, after looking around a little, I found the Telluride has 42.4" of 2nd row legroom. That's 5.5" more 2nd row legroom than her current car and 3.5" more than a Tahoe. The 3rd row has 31.4" of legroom (24.8" for a Tahoe) so I am guessing when the 3rd row is up you can't put anything behind the seat, but we can cargo rack the gear on those occasions. I also like that the 2nd row has captains chairs so the dog can lay down between there if the 3rd row is up.

Any other ideas? I love it, but I am not convinced I will be able to sell my wife on a Kia. We need something with a 3rd row that will get used a few times a year at most, but it will be on long trips and will keep us from taking 2 cars. I would prefer midsize for gas mileage purposes and my comfort level of Mrs Socks' driving skills. It needs all wheel drive for snow/mountains. And 2nd row legroom is a big deal as you can tell.

We just got a Hyundai Palisade (today, actually), and from what my wife said during her hunting, it's pretty similar to the Kia Telluride. From the three hours I've owned this vehicle, seems like it has a decent amount of space behind the 2nd row when the third row is down, and my daughters (7 & 10) say there's plenty of room in the back seats, and I've got my front seat all the way back.

Now actually getting hold of one is a completely different beast, they're all held up due to the microchip shortage. We've been waiting on this one since May. Our dealer got two of them yesterday, we got one, and someone else was buying the other today. And from what I hear, it's such a seller's market that a lot of dealers are marking up the sticker price several thousand dollars. Fortunately ours did not (or I wouldn't have bought it).

Honda Pilot? I think in that class it's going to give you the most usable storage behind the third row seat without sacrificing leg room for the 2nd and third rows.

We almost bought a Pallisade a couple of months back. The wife is looking to replace the acadia. I really like the Pallisade. Lots of legroom, and the creature comforts that thing has is next level. The digital dash, the camera's, all of it is impressive. And it's a good looking vehicle too.

Ultimately the wife is of a certain age and remembers when Hyundais were laughing stocks, so it was too big of a mental block for her to get over.

It's not a dependable ride but it's a comfortable one. Kia still has a ways to go. Inlaws bought one. Been a lot of small issues, primarily electrical and with the computer stuff. Just annoying things.

Volvo bro... No repairs yet, I am just dreading the day. Not quite Land Rover level fear, but I don't trust the Swedish after the way the handled Covid.***

Seriously, when we bought the Volvo, she was commuting for 45 minutes in Dallas traffic everyday for work and I wanted her to be comfortable as possible and the Volvo interior (especially the seats) is legit. But I always had the reliability concern.

Fast forward to today and she works from home and doesn't put a lot of miles on her car. Now that it is paid off and in super high demand on the used market (KBB has trade in at 70% of the purchase price, I can basically get something a little less "fancy" under a 5 year warranty for little to no cash out of pocket. So I figure in 5 years a 2022 Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade with 30K miles will be a much better vehicle in both dependability and value than a 2017 Volvo with 75K miles.

Plus the extra legroom is real nice when have kids in boosters accidentally kick the back of your seat ever 2 minutes. In my truck, it has to be intentional for them to kick my seat... and they know better.

Thanks VH. Exact same dimensions and what appears to be nicer finishes in the higher end models without having to get black rims. This is why I came to the pack. I am in now leaning this way.

I bought a Kia Sorento a couple years ago for work and it’s been great. I’m 6’5 so I have a hard time fitting in cars, but I have plenty of space. I plan on getting the Telluride next for work. Only complaint is the computer can drag some but it’s most likely due to the amount of contacts I have in my phone, over 1200.

I just looked at the Highlander... The interior is a lot nicer than I would have expected after looking at the Forerunner early on. Good legroom too. It doesn't look like at has the Captain's chairs option on the 2nd row we are looking for... Her car before the Volvo was an 07' Tahoe with the captains chairs and it made getting in and out of the 3rd for kids with booster or carseats possible. If I am missing that option, someone please let me know.

The old lady has a 2021 Highlander Platinum Hybrid, it does have 2nd row captain chairs. She loves it, it gets close to 40 mpg in town. We drove it to Omaha, it was very comfortable.

That's the $64,000 question. Our goal is always to buy new keep vehicles for 10 years. Because of the lopsided used market right now, we are considering trading in a 2017 for a 2022 at basically an even swap. Last week I drove her Volvo while she was out of town and noticed it was riding rougher than my F-250. Turns out when I took swapped her snow tires in March with the summer tires, she has not let an air out and now that its in triple digits every day, her tires were all pushing 50 PSI. (Kinda my fault, but the damn car doesn't tell you what the PSI just if one tire is lower than the others.) She also hasn't asked me to take off her ski racks that sound like the Vandy Whislter when you get over 65 mph without skis in them.

So with this in mind, no matter what she says, road noise and ride quality aren't important to her. It's about creature comforts and prestige... From the looks below, the creature comforts look pretty comparable. The "prestige" will be be the big hurdle.

Nice vehicle! I almost bought one when they first came out but opted for a Lincoln MKX because the back seats were heated and more comfortable. We take trips to FL to see my wife's family so I need 4 comfortable.

Hyundais and Kias, man, I don’t know. My buddy worked in the auto parts business and would joke that 2-year old Hyundais and Kias were making him rich. Palisade and Telluride are Sierra and Silverado — basically the same. Genesis also makes a higher end version of the Palisade.

Not sure what the class is, but I would consider the explorer and the other stuff I am looking at to be Midsize SUV's. Explorer has 39" of 2nd row legroom and the Palisade and Telluride are both at 42.4"... Which is ahead of the fullsize 2nd row legroom in Tahoe's, Expeditions, and Suburbans. The 3rd row is about the same legroom on the Explorer as most others.

By the way the top-line version, the Calligraphy, has this suede leather interior roof that shows every finger that’s ever touched it. We sat in a brand new one off the truck yesterday and it was triggering my OCD. Major turnoff. We were shooting for a Limited because of that, but we took an SEL with the premium package….it’s basically a Limited without the turn signal cameras (which I did not like), and without the cooling seats (which I also did not like, feels like you’re peeing yourself).

Seriously, that roof on the Calligraphy, it was a deal breaker for both of us. <shudder>

We just transitioned from a XC90 to the Telluride. Wife's car but I love it. Have sat in all three rows and been comfortable in each. Friend just bought the Palisades and they love that as well.

Don't know if your wife's game for a top-trim minivan, but my wife loves her '20 Pacifica. It's got similar leg room stats you need -- 41.1 front, 39 2nd row, 36.5 3rd row -- has massive cargo capacity that dwarfs 3rd row SUVs like Pilots and Highlanders -- 33.5 cu. ft. behind 3rd row, 87.5 cu. ft. behind second row, and 140.5 behind the 1st row -- and, since it's the plug-in hybrid trim, gets great MPG (~30 miles on a charge, then 30 mpg on gas). I was skeptical at first, but its pretty damn plush and super functional. The kids (out of boosters, but still little) love their captains chairs, too. They've got freaking fold-up screens in front of them like they're on an airplane.

Another similar option is the new Toyota Sienna. Dimensions are all pretty similar to the Pacifica. It's a hybrid, too, and is rated at 36 mpg combined. Plus, it's AWD, so that's kinda cool in case that's something you need. Not a plug-in like the Pacifica, though, so no pure electric driving and no tax credit.

We have an explorer limited. It's nice. But it doesn't have the captains chairs and we would rather have something a little bigger. I will say that I much more prefer the width of the seats in the front compared to some other suvs I've driven. The seats have a lot of room so it makes it a lot more comfortable driving especially commuting as much as I do on a regular basis.

We've got a 20 limited Palisade, bought it January 2020. Got about 15,000 miles on it. We love it. It's been 2 years ago when we did all the test driving but we were down to it, Pilot, and VW Atlas. Highlander is a little smaller. Explorer at that 50k price is not as nice.

I'd recommend joining an owner group on Facebook and doing research. It's not going to be as polished as a true luxury suv so don't expect that. But it's nice. Absolute dream to take on a long road trip. Main problem I've seen people complaining about is a whistling noise on the driver window. I've kind of noticed it, but only in windy weather. The windshields are crap. Lots of people with cracks and had to replace them in year or less. Ours got a good size peck but got it repaired before it split.

One thing that will get annoying is people flashing you at night. The lights on dim blind the hell out of people. Nothing you can do about it.

Ask me anything you might want to know. Telluride is basically the same underneath. I personally like the ride and seats of the Telluride but there were none available when we were looking (we drove a pre-owned one with low miles) and dealers were charging about 5k over msrp for any that were coming in.

We just bought a car for our daughter and traded in our 2014 traverse for it. If you’re trading in now is the time, we got several thousand more for it than we normally would have. Of course prices are up also, our traverse had a bunch of miles on it and was about to be pretty worthless so we came out great. We were in shock to be honest. They didn’t even open the doors to look inside it.

Well that's pretty stupid. But for what it's worth, Car & Driver gives the Telluride a 10/10 rating and Motor Trend gives it an 8.9/10 and named it SUV of the year.

I see it now. On the build your own site the image was playing tricks on me when one seat was laying down. I see the little folding arm though. Again. Interior on this highlander is much nicer than I am accustomed to wit Toyotas. It checks all the boxes for the dependability too.
