Abro I am looking for winners. You are giving us a history lesson.

You can't go wrong with Secretariat !
However, with the thick mud, I'd do research and find if there are any 'mudders' in the field. McCracken is has some experience winning on mud.

"McCraken (434): At early-morning odds of 9-1, McCraken is a consideration if the track is sloppy. He won the Jockey Club Stakes in November on a sloppy track."

another -
Classic Empire (376): The Derby favorite broke his maiden over a sloppy track at Churchill Downs a year ago in his debut race. But that has been his only wet track.

PS- from an article from Sarge, who apparently took over for Looch as the Ledgers horsy writer.

I am going with a bomb on the inside.

Thunder Snow currently 16-1. Won at Dubai in the mud. Also won a group 1 on the turf over in Europe as a 2 year old. Should have no trouble making the trip.

2 concerns

1. He has travelled quite a ways, and no horse from Dubai has ever won the derby.
2. Don't like the 2 hole for him. If he gets squeezed at the start that may hurt him

Overall I think I am being fairly compensated at 16-1 and one of these years the Sheikh is going to win one.

NBC was saying earlier that all the trainers were very impressed with McCracken today. He's fired up and ready to go. He wasn't really prepped right for the race he lost but today looks like a completely different horse.

And after all this I'm going to miss the race because I have to go pick up my daughter at work in ten minutes. Aaargh!

Man what a wet, muddy track. There are puddles all over it.

Yeah ik he was the favorite but historically favorites rarely win the Derby so good call Moose
I believe the favorite has won the Kentucky Derby 5 years in a row now.

I bet him too. Paid out pretty well for a favorite.

Always Dreaming looked solid, but 2:03 is a rather slow time, even in the slop. Looking forward to seeing him at the Preakness.

Classic Empire is the class of this field. He ran a huge race in the slop to finish 4th. He was slammed out of the gate and got buried at the back. The trip is part of the sport but if he gets away clean he wins. Assuming he came out of the race yesterday healthy he'll beat Always Dreaming in one of the next two.

So I picked 4 horses yesterday to do a $2 exacta box and a $1 trifecta box. I figured this run of favorites couldn't continue so I went McCracken instead of Dreaming, the horse I liked most ( Gunnevara), and 2 long shots I liked.

Obviously Dreaming killed my exacta/trifecta, but it was made especially painful that my long shots were Looking at Lee and Battle of Midway.

I also bet those two $3 WPS, so I broke about even on my bets, but what a missed opportunity.
