They came up in a conversation last night. Are there anymore left around MS? I know there are juke joints around but I'm talking about ones that you can patronize and not feel like you're going to get shot or stabbed.

How many years has it been since The Subway Lounge closed. Had some good times at The Subway back in the early 90's.

The one owned by Morgan Freeman is still open I believe. I'm forgetting the name. Also there is one in Bessemer AL called Gip's Place that is fantastic.

I believe the law closed Gip’s and Morgan Freeman’s place Ground Zero isn’t a juke joint. They claim it is but it ain’t.

Not sure if this is the actual name or not but LaVene Music Center not too far from Freeman’s place is a total juke joint.

Gip's is still open. They tried closing but the locals lost their ****. They ended up working something out with the complainant.

There is one on Walnut Street in Greenville but they only open it when the urge to jam strikes them. And I am not talking about the Blues Bar or Spectators.

Not sure if it's considered a "Juke Joint", but I've shot many a game a pool at Club Caprice or Ma Shumate's. Anyone know if it's still there?

And the answer is no, I did not partake in any other of the amenities offered.

You seem to know them quite well. :)

What was that joint in Columbus when I was in school? Len Lew's seems to sound right. And of course, there was the Crossroads. I'm sure both are long gone by now.

I always thought it was Ma Shoemaker’s. Anyway, what about Big Daddy’s just down the road? I had some crazy times in that place.

Are you thinking about The Thicket in Prichard?

I think it’s called the Barn now or something. Not really a juke joint anymore.

Po Monkey’s closed about 3 years ago when the owner died. Haven’t heard of it being reopened. Red’s Lounge in Clarksdale is probably one of the more authentic juke joints around. Visqueen on the ceiling to catch water leaks when it’s raining with 5 gallon buckets strategically placed on the floor. $5 cover to keep the riff raff out!

Question for the coast Dawgs on the board.
Not sure if you would call it a Juke Joint, probably more like a Beer Joint.
In 90-91? We (Landscape architects) had a project in Biloxi and a guy in our class carried us to Bunks in Ocean Springs one night. All I remember is our small group filled this place up and they had .75 cent draft beer in a frosty mug.
Anybody know if this place is still around?

Club Ebony which was owned by BB King is in Indianola. Red's in Clarksdale is also a great little "hole in the wall" juke joint. I have enjoyed some good music in both of them. Ground Zero gets some good acts. If you haven't caught Stacy Mitchhart at one of these places I highly recommend him. I've seen him perform 4 different times and enjoyed every show. The ladies at Ground Zero said he is their favorite to ever play Ground Zero. He is based in Nashville and includes horns in most of his performances.

No, that was Bunks service station, which was also a juke joint. It is now one of those cross-fit places. Used to go there as a teenager and get a quart of beer for 25 cents. "you're getting this for you dad, right son?" "yes sir" I would reply.

Im sure not classified as a "Juke Joint", but what was that place on Old 82 just as it meets 45 4lane. it was what looked like a big white old shotgun house and I only ever saw something going on there once or twice when I was in college in the 2005-2007 years.
