Smoltz is very knowledgable in his broadcast but comes off as a complete prick. Where as Ron Darling is very knowledgable but comes off as such a nice, likeable guy.

Thank God Tim Mccarver is gone. Love Smoltz, he's a pitching nerd and love hearing him breakdown approaches and the battles between pitcher and batter...mitigates the annoying Buck almost completely, which I never thought was possible. Fox should add him to the golf team, as well.

I remember listening to Lindsey Nelson when the Mets during the early seasons.

Lindsey and Murphy were in the booth (forgot who else). Anyway, Lindsey had this annoying habit of talking about a play, then rehashing the play using essentially the same words...

E.g. So Hickman was able to hit the ball over the left field wall and cut the deficit to 8-1. There's Jim as he circles the bases....you see him there.
Marvelous Marv is coming up followed by Choo Choo Coleman. Two out...bottom of the 9th. And the pitch, fast ball for a swinging strike. You see it there.

PSBeisbol been berry berry good to me!
PPS Used to occassionally listen to Pirate broadcasts. Bob Prince was such a homer:
"C'mon boys, we need a hit"!

Ralph Kiner! The team of Nelson, Murphy and Kiner was rivaled only by the Yankees team of Rizzuto, Messer, and White. Those were the days.

"How About That"!

I personally liked Mel Allen / Red Barber...

Also liked Harry Caray when he was a Cardinal Announcer on KMOX ....used to skip the radio in NJ / pick up St. Lou late in the evening.

Tragically, all Topps. Got 'em in packs of 100. Paid $40 total. Got 'em during his second year in the bigs.
That was about the time I started collecting again, missed about 20 years in between. I pulled a Griffey rookie out of a 1989 Topps pack that was worth about $ 100 at one time. Didn't get the purple version.
I probably stopped buying a few years ago. Got to crazy with all the special cards and more expensive too. Can't even estimate how many cards I have from all sports, but not many worth big bucks.
I still enjoy the cards from the 50's, classic.

I collected as a kid, but my mom gave all my cards away at a garage sale while I was away at college. Makes my head hurt to think of what I had back then, as I started collecting in 57.

Picked it up again with my son when he was about 8 in '86. We have some good ones, including Tinkers, and an Evers and Chance combo card, a Moe Berg, a bunch of Sandy Koufaxes. Once, when I was feeling flush for some reason, we bought a lot of cards at a show. At the end of the day, my son says, "Hey dad, look at this. It's a Wayne Gretzky rookie card." Was about $40 at the time, and I said, "Nah, he might not pan out, and I don't think hockey cards will ever really get big.

What I did get that was worthwhile was a first printing TMNT first edition. Cost me $300 at the time, but worth a ton more now. Of course, my boy has it all, and that's good.

I started in '54 with Topps when so many great players were just beginning their careers. Being a NY Giants fan, I had Lots of Mays cards and Williams, Aaron etc. I had Mantle too, but not his rookie cards which didn't mean as much to me. I loved the Bowman's and tv screen cards which later on became more valuable. Usually keep all the cards in shoe boxes or rubber bands.
We didn't really trade cards, but flipped and tossed them to win them from each other.
When I went off to college my mom gave the cards to our church in a rummage sale. Somebody ended up with a good chunk of change if they took care of them. In those days it was more of a kid's s thing to do as a hobby than adults and it was very affordable. Who knew it would be worth so much. If you only collected in the 50' s and 60' s , you made out very well.
