That's what I thought. I have never been much for the "ped" reference but perhaps referring to them as PedSU has some merit. Still not my thing but their arrogance is annoying.

Well, they are tied for first place in the B1G and we are #13. Didn't we used to be pretty good in wrestling?

Well we call other teams names like IoA. What’s the difference?

Don’t think answering name calling with more name calling is the most effective Way to deal with it.

Northwestern use to be very good in wrestling during the Ken Kraft era. I don't know the recent history.

Yes I did. And if jNW is arrogant so is Io_a far as I can discern.

A little perspective:

I believe jNW was originated by writers for BHGP, or at least that is where I found first references to it. My memory is that it started t show up around the same time Fitz became head coach. Personally, I found their writers well informed and wickedly funny. They also originated angry Iowa running back hating god to describe the year the first 4 Iowa running backs were injured.

The jNW context revolves around the disparity between the dominance of the Frey era relative to NU, the more recent series parity, butthe general superiority of Hawk to Cats in the late Walker year’s.

The reaction by Cats writers and fans with Io_a was appropriate and damned funny, and back-handedly acknowledged by commenters on BHGP (not unlike some Nebraska fans who acknowledge the “real NU” in years the Cats beat UNL).

My feeling is that broader use of jNW, as it is used here is arrogant, misguided, and misapplied, much as it would be if some fan of some other B1G applied it to men’s basketball. For it to make sense, you need a few years of the Cats overperforming versus a specific team, as they did in football against Iowa in the time the phrase originated.

I am not following why one is arrogant and not the other.

The original jNW was satiric, and in context was a tacit admission that NU had done fairly well against Iowa in a given stretch of time.
The use by a PSU wrestling commentator is a statement that NU is not very good, which is obvious. It is a gratuitous usage, not a satiric one.

Did you read BHGP about 12 years ago or more?

Just Northwestern. As in, it's "just" Northwestern, no big deal.

When did that term spread? I remember the Iowa fans coming up with it (I promised I wouldn't say Ioa anymore after they helped vote Jansey into the UnderArmour game), since when did PED U fans start using it?

Michigan = scUM

Maryland = Murdaland (credit to The Wire)

MSU = now Molestor State University

Minnesota = the Goofers

Purdue = PurDon’t

Indiana = Too bad historically in football to merit a nickname. HoosierDaddy (who’s your Daddy?) is the first that comes to mind.

JNW looks among the least derisive

We often have good individuals but don't have the depth other teams do because we do not use all our available scholarships. Blame title 9. Same thing happens in Swimming and diving and in Baseball. Add to that a coach that had us competing at a high level that was fired, We have been rebuilding since

Why blame title 9? Why not blame football since that is what creates the gender imbalance in available scholarships.

It is the same for most programs however, at a small school like NU you have to have enough women' s sports or cut mens. The alternative is to cut the number of scholarships on the mens teams you have. And that is what NU has done in those sports. Personally, I feel FB should be excluded from the limits as it funds all the rest

It spread to Off Tackle Empire pretty quickly, where the rest of the B1G picked it up.

All in good fun
