In what way?
I don’t really follow his Twitter, but at his last concert I went to in 2021 he talked a lot about this and about abortion: https://americansongwriter.com/jason-isbell-announces-new-covers-album-for-charity-georgia-blue/

That’s an odd headline for an album he made in support of the Democratic Party. Yes, he donated to “charities,” but in fact those are all progressive activist groups and he was trying to encourage people to vote for Biden by promising he’d make this album in tribute to Georgia.

Doesn’t really change how I like his music much, but it does make me less likely to want to see a documentary about him making music.

That version of nightswimming is awful. Yikes. What a ******* joke. He should be indicted by Alvin Bragg.

Those guys were not shy about being vocally anti George W and anti republican in their shows back in 2003 and 2004.
Ironically, the last show I saw him play was with Sheryl Crow, who was one of the most obnoxious at the time. There were several eye rolling moments during the show.

If anyone thinks Jason isbell or the drive by truckers are only recently liberal, you are showing that you were not paying attention before. Nothing about those guys politics has changed in 20 plus years.
No. They were nothing like they are now. The first couple decades into their career they were very cognizant of social issues in the South at a time when people were completely closed off to alternative lifestyles and still fairly ignorant. Their message was sane and sensible. But they weren’t batshit crazy like they are now. Now they’re out in left field and act like the world hasn’t changed since they were growing up, which is absolutely fvcking stupid

I was at the HeAthens homecoming in 2016, and Hood got up behind a BLM sign on stage and became visibly irate, and started yelling at the crowd about social issues. Stuck his fist in the air and instructed the crowd to do the same. It was like a fvcking cult meeting, and my buddy and I were just completely caught off guard. Haven’t been back since. I’m good with taking some political/social stances, but they’ve jumped the shark. And Isbell is worse at this point

You obviously don’t or haven’t followed him in on Twitter. He also some pretty politically charged songs on the last few albums.
He's absolutely insufferable on Twitter, I had to unfollow. That said, the "30-50 wild hogs within 3-5 minutes" exchange he had with a guy on there is one of a HOFTwitter moment.

Fair enough. I agree then. People who pay good money to watch their favorite musicians perform, should not be subjected to some political rant. I probably agree with most of his politics, but my feeling has always been if you have a political message then put it in your song. People don't pay money to listen to artists wax on about their politics. Period.

Twitter is a different matter. I don't see why someone should keep their opinions to themselves just because they're a celebrity. On stage, keep it to yourself. In the real world, they're entitled to their opinions just like we are.

I think you're projecting a little bit about their earlier days, but yes, they're more extreme now. You can look at The Bitter Southerner, which used them as their main inspiration for their ethos, as a barometer for what's going on with them. They used to be very thoughtful about racial issues, and rightly integrated southern blackness into "the southern thing." Sure, they were liberal, but it was a liberal-ness embedded in southern-ness. Now, they're fully woke and promoting sympathetic pieces about the guy who shot police outside Atlanta just because he was on their side.

In this thread you’ll learn who is low key Racist and homo/transphobic. They’ll be the ones lamenting Isbell selling his musical soul to the Devil of Wokeness.
Do you not consider making a whole album as a way to get people to vote Democrat a bit much? LOL at "homo/transphobic," though.

I’m aware. I think his peak as a writer was somewhere during the DBT days. (******** lonely love. Decoration day.) Those two albums were still very good. What’s followed has been far far from that level. And, I still really like the guy. Puts on a great live show.
I would just counter that his first few efforts after leaving the band have a handful of good songs, but are mostly forgettable.
I think his most recent 3 albums are better by every stretch than his first 3.
As far as the live shows , I oddly prefer the wild drunken days to now.

I find it very hard to believe that his promise to record a cover album influenced a single vote. Seems like more of a fun thing for him.

I'm sure it didn't influence many people. It's still pretty obnoxious.

Anyway, since somebody brought up the way cultural politics have changed in the last 20 years, this song was one of the top rock singles in 1999:

Affirmative may be justified
Take from one, give to another
The goal is to be unified
Take my hand, be my brother
The payment silenced the masses
Sanctified by oppression
Unity took a back seat
Sliding further into regression

One, oh, one, the only way is one
One, oh, one, the only way is one

I feel angry, I feel helpless
Want to change the world, yeah
I feel violent, I feel alone
Don't try and change my mind, no

Society, blind by color
Why hold down one to raise another?
Discrimination, now on both sides
Seeds of hate blossom further
The world is headed for mutiny
When all we want is unity
We may rise and fall
But in the end, we'll meet our fate again, oh

Christian rock song was at the top of the charts. Crazy how things have changed.

People posting that he's fallen off on the last few albums cannot have listened to those albums. The Nashville Sound (2017) is absolutely incredible, there are no skips on that album. Tupelo, Vampires, Chaos & Clothes...all incredible songs. I also love Reunions (2020). Go listen to Dreamsicle and tell me that's not a phenomenal song. Same with Only Children and especially River.

You don’t skip the song about how bad white people are?

I agree completely. Reunions is an, at times, haunting album. Only Children and St. Peter’s autograph, the former about a friend of Jason’s who died of an overdose and the latter about his feelings of helplessness watching Amanda mourn the suicide of a former boyfriend, are two of his best efforts ever.

And “Letting You Go” makes me wish I had a daughter…it’s the perfect song for a Father/Daughter dance at a wedding reception.

Agreed. The song St Peters autograph is just phenomenal.

This is such a lazy line of thinking. Everybody is racist and homophobic because they don’t like the constant propaganda from the left. Obama really did a number on this country.

A musician espousing his personal beliefs, whether through songs or tweets/diatribes/etc. is hardly propaganda though.

he’s parroting the party line propaganda. None of his ideas are his own or in any way unique or insightful. You can get the same message from Karine Jean Pierre, Disney, Apple, etc.

I see you edited your post Klaus ( I saw what you posted originally). I said DC because honestly I think you tried to single her out because of her race. When you go play around on your waffle house simulator Blackstone grill this weekend I really hope it doesn't flare up.

Because I misread your post. Has nothing to do with her race. Easily the worst White House press secretary I’ve ever seen. And that’s saying a lot

Ok cool, hook em. Not surprising you're in a thread where everyone seems to be crying into their cheerios having found out Jason isn't a chud even though he's made that quite clear for just about 20 years now. Reading comprehension is something powerful.
