Anyone else been? Just got back from a 5 day trip. Absolutely stunning country. Stayed in Reykjavik. Saw the Northern Lights, did the Blue Lagoon, glacier hikes, incredible waterfalls, black lava pebble beaches, and a ton more. Really easy travel from EWR -- about 4 hour flight there, 5 hours back.

Really highly recommend for all outdoorsy nature-loving people. Curious if anyone else has been and what their experiences were.

Well I haven't been single in quite awhile. But yes nightlife is good and if you're into fair-skinned blondes, they have 'em.

All I know about Iceland is:
1. Iceland is green, but Greenland is ice
2. It's where Westeros is located

Went almost 2 years ago. Fantastic trip. Same kind of things you did. Black sand beaches, volcanos, amazing waterfalls, hidden hot springs, glacier hikes etc. Light outside almost the entire day when we went so no northern lights. Stayed in Vik for a night as well as Reykjavik.

SSSShhhhhhhhh.... If pressed, tell everyone it's an absolutely horrible place, loaded with inhospitable, teetotalling, UGLY folks, polluted environs, terrible eats, and an exorbitant crime rate. Then (secretly) plan your return trip.

I went there around 20 years ago for a horse riding trip. Really fun and a cool way to see the country side. My buddy and I were the only single guys on the tour. And it was like 6:1 F/M. After the nice young female tour guides realized we weren't gay, an already good time got kicked up a notch.

Was there November 2017. 3 Nights in Reykjavik 3 nights in Vik. Stunningly beautiful everywhere I went. Everyone spoke English and the people were incredibly warm and welcoming. I will go back again and drive the recently completed perimeter next time. Short flight from the Northeast was a bonus.

Daughter went last winter- got a great off season price. Loved it but due to bad weather didn’t get to see Northern Lights. She definitely wants to go back.

been planning some trips there for a while but havent got there yet. Heard it's not the cheapest place for meals...and i guess some other aspect.
Looking forward to making it there. I believe Iceland air makes it pretty easy to do combo trips with Iceland and another country with extended stopovers.

It is a really interesting place to visit. Not too expensive to get there but once you are there it sure is expensive. Would highly recommend the blue lagoon on your arrival as a way to relax before heading to your hotel. I would also recommend one of the all day tours and if you can only do one I would recommend the northern tour. Other than that I think 3 nights are enough to see what you want to see unless you want to go camping. With Iceland Air and Wow Air they fly to other places in Europe, but allow you to stay in Iceland for days and then continue on to the Continent with no penalties. Which is a good way to help lessen jet lag and the time change.

Went with my wife in 2017 - did the full drive around the island. Lots of great areas, and wish we had a few more days to linger in a couple of them. In no way a cheap trip, though.

It's not the cheapest place for anything. Gas, meals, groceries, beer, you name it. They wanted $20 for a pound of bacon in one of the grocery stores.

For anyone planning a trip, though, make sure you keep in mind the hours of daylight. In the winter, there's almost no daylight, and in the summer there's almost no darkness. We went in the fall, and it was just about even 12 hrs / 12 hrs - which was great, but left a fair amount of driving after dark. Driving at night was no fun, especially if there's weather - there were definitely a few harrowing moments.

It’s a good pit stop on the way to Europe. I feel that it’s overrated though. Blue Lagoon is cool. Flight is cheap and everything else is crazy expensive.

Yes, it is expensive. The Nordic Economic Model has a lot of "free" stuff that has to be paid for somehow.

Went a few years ago for a week. Stayed in Reykjavik and did day trips out to the countryside. Would certainly go back and stay in other places.

My grandfather was an architect on the Keflavik airport ages ago. It’s been through a few renovations since, but still cool to see it.

Jokulsarlon, thingvellir, and the north were beautiful. The highlight was hiking up Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull
Blue Lagoon is overrated IMO.

Getting there was cheap. Once there, food was expensive. And since the airline lost our luggage, we had to go to Haugkap (Iceland’s answer to Walmart/Target) and drop coin on expensive clothes.

Went there for 10 days this past July. Took in most of the country. Had a great time. Black Sand beaches, snowmobiling on the glacier, hiking, white water rafting, incredible waterfalls, and almost 24 hour daylight! Definitely recommend the trip. Fly into Reykjavik, and go to the only Costco in the country to load up on as much food as possible. Use your restaurant trips sparingly.

Went there some time ago. No other place on Earth like it!
Drove on highway 1 to their woolen center "Vic" and it was staffed by three ladies total knitting sweaters, LOL. They have wool like no other place in the world along with horses that have an extra gait and appear to have immunities that Cornell is studying to see if they can use it on other horses.
Apparently, lawyers don't sue easily. You can walk right up to thermal springs that would boil you in seconds and they have no fences around them, just a simple sign telling you not to put your hands in it. Looks like you are held to a much higher standard of being responsible for your own actions there.
Like Alaska, very high use of alcohol and drug abuse though.

Some of it is taxes (alcohol tax is really high) and some of it is just the cost associated with damn near everything being imported because they don't manufacture or grow a whole lot on the island itself.

friends said the lobster was really good and better than here (although smaller).

Yeah, we had some of their langoustine tails at a place called Pakkhus in Hofn, on the east coast. They're very narrow - the tails are about half as wide as the lobster tails we get here. Delicious, but pricey. 2/3 lb of split tails ran about $70+.

Gas was also an interesting experience, as there are no gas station attendants. Gas is handled almost like our ATMs - you drive up to a pump on the side of the road or at the back of a grocery store's parking lot, insert your card and pump your crazily expensive gas (about $7 a gallon right now). We filled up every time we saw one, because once you left a town it was sometimes several hours of driving before the next pump.

Most of the roads aren't paved, either, other than the main ring road and the roads around Reykjavik - so we went with an SUV to tool around, which wasn't exactly great on mileage. We met an Australian guy who used to derby race, and he said the trick is to go faster over the heavily potholed roads so that you don't sink into each one and instead skip along the tops - it really turned out to be less bumpy, but driving at higher speeds on largely dirt/gravel roads with no lights and steep dropoffs was certainly not dull.

While there's a ton of awesome stuff accessible as day trips from Reykjavik, if you have the time the east coast (Hofn, Jokulsarlon, etc) and north/northeast (Lake Myvatn, Dettifos, Akureyri) are worth checking out.

A local told me that if any of their Icelandic-born horses leave the country, they are not allowed back, as they likely are being exposed to viruses/germs that would threaten the immunities of the native horses.

Alcohol tax is upwards of 90%.

We went to a black pebble beach along the south shore (not far from Vik) where a good number of people have apparently died getting too close to the water and heavy surf. Just one or two signs saying "danger" and nothing else. I also walked up a very icy narrow staircase near a waterfall to get better views/pictures. This kinda stuff would never fly here (or most westernized countries).

Certainly makes sense and the Cornell study did say that once the study is done, the horses would be available for purchase.
As you also saw, Iceland can be a very dangerous place for individuals that think nothing can happen to them. Cannot imagine them ever becoming a Spring break destination. The bodies would be all over the place!

Went in 2017 and loved it! We stayed in Reykjavik and did the entire Southern coast in days. One of the safest countries on the planet. We didn't even see any sign on the police during our stay. Highly recommended!

Please define" in no way a cheap trip" (approx. $).

My dream trip is Egypt. I took several courses from the Great Courses, Prof. Bob Brier (LIU). His trips are about $13K / person for about 11 days / add another 10-15% for a few meals not included, this and that...etc.

Unfortunately I'm not going because of the instability. How much was the Icelandic excursion?

Thanks
