After watching all the talk and video I no longer think it was planned. I give Chris Rock thumbs down for the joke but thumbs up for the way he handled the slap.

Good on you for acknowledging a mistake.

From someone who watches a lot of comedy, that joke was extremely mild.

The issue this exposed even more clearly is our continued worship of celebrity. The man should not have been given the option of staying in that venue. He should have been removed at the first opportunity, forcibly if necessary.

He likely ruined the evening for many, many much less famous and wealthy, but more deserving people for nothing more than possibly extending his sham of a marriage a few more months or years. I hope he actually pays a heavy price for this, but somehow I doubt it.

All comedy is irreverent.

I found comedy in the irony of Hollywood’s elite in full self-congratulatory mode that night in condemning the violence in Ukraine, but on-stage, black-on black violence is justified by many because of a joke.

I don't think the joke was funny, but the more I think about it, it also wasn't offensive. She has a shaved head and Rock made a GI Jane reference. I understand that her head is shaved due to hair loss, but he didn't say anything negative. He referenced a movie.

I was amazed how many people (including on this board) tried to justify what Smith did. "Talk **** about my wife, I'd a done the same thing." How weak are people to think that joke justified assault? My 13 year old niece can take that joke. If you just look at Will's reaction and the people defending him, you would assume that something extremely offensive had been said. They'd still be wrong to justify violence in response to a joke, but I'd expect something a lot better than a GI Jane reference.

It was mild, but also aimed at a very fresh and raw personal wound. Really kicking her when she's down. In all this celebrity obsession with protecting comedians, and they are right that it's the comic's job to take on society etc, a comedian is still supposed to leave their audience LAUGHING. That joke only left hurt in its wake. I would have thought more southerners would understand that if you cross a line you risk a pop in the mouth. And he crossed that line. Not that it's right, but as CR would say, but I understand.

It wasn't staged.

Full stop.

Full stop nothing. These are actors. You got played.

If it's true that Phizer has an Alopecia medication coming in the near future I can believe they would pull this kind of thing off to draw attention to the condition his wife has.

Does the term "violence" include what Will Smith did to Chris Rock?

Glad she didn't get an "aunt Esther" wig. Things could've really gotten ugly **

Posts like this make me believe we are doomed as a society. We have failed.

I know it's trendy to use "full stop" these days but it's gotta be the most annoying linguistic moves in the game.

I find it hilarious that people have fixated on something that doesn't matter while a war is going on in the Ukraine, we have runaway inflation, our leaders are passing anti-lynching laws and the border is like a revolving door. 90% of the crap from the media is smoke and mirrors to keep people from understanding what is really going on. It would have been great if everyone at that event had stood up looked right or left and slapped each other.

Are anti-lynching laws a... problem?

For all the slow people that are clueless on how this works, here is a visual aid for you

It's ok to be slow but it is not ok to ignore data. As if your own perspective of things is fact. LMAO at you.

For those frontal lobes not devolving and not blindly drinking the sewer that media spoon feeds you, we salute you.

So a pharma giant secretly paid the Smiths and Rock to participate in this really indirect and roundabout guerilla marketing ploy?

I havent followed this think closely, but that is definitely a new conspiracy to me. Are there other off the wall theories like this?

Lynching is murder. Murder is already illegal and should be punished harsher than it is. Nobody on this board knows if it was planned or not. This fact that someone would not believe that it is possible that it might be fake is very concerning. Remember Juicy Smollet. I have no idea if it was or was not. Also that joke was not overly offensive and all that was uncalled for. Maybe punching him in the mouth backstage would be more appropriate.

She had just put out a ******* video saying she was proud of it and liked her new shaved head. She could have taken the joke for what it is... a f'ing joke.

That's IF Rock even knew she had alopecia. He probably did not. Hell a bunch of strong black women are shaving their heads these days. What a crock of ****.

The Smith family is weird as hell. Anyone ever watched any interviews with them? They are all hugely narcissistic and have very fragile egos. They live in a bubble because of all of their money. Their kid Jayden is weird as 17 too. By end Will Smith won’t be able to smack all the people are going to be making fun of him and his wife. Also, his wife 17ed one of their kid’s friends. This **** is like the Jerry Springer show. Just cause you’re rich and famous doesn’t mean you can’t be trash.

Quit blaming society for the idiocy of individuals.

Well I was halfway joking. But it's so commonplace. These message boards are full of supposed college graduates who never learned the basic critical thinking to see through these wild conspiracy theories.
