Wherever you are staying, throw a rock and you’ll hit a really good restaurant. Astros are in town so there is that. If the Dynamo are in and you have never been to a soccer match, it’s an experience. I love going to them. Warning, you eat Mexican food here, it’ll never be the same anywhere else.
Where are you staying? So many good spots around town but I can narrow them down once I know what part of town you will be staying
Cool. That's right where I live. Escalante's in Highland Village, El Patio on Westheimer, El Tiempo on Gessner, Good Co. Taqueria on Kirby. There's some new place in the galleria right below Nobu that fronts Westheimer called Blanco's but I haven't heard anything about it. All of these are great, but go to El Tiempo. Enjoy your trip.
Papasito's Cantina has some of the best Tex Mex.
You will find them in all areas of Houston.
They do not take reservations and wait times can be an hour+ at traditional meal times.
When we go, we typically go for a late lunch (1:30-2:00) an early dinner (3:30-4:30).
Beef Fajita's and Shrimp Brochette are 2 of my favorites.
They also have great guacamole and queso w/ground beef.

Yep, Texas and California ruined Mexican for me. Nobody does street tacos like California and the tex mex around Houston is awesome. Best steak burritos you will ever have. Beef just tastes better in Texas. Traveling with women take them to woodlands to go shopping that area is nice. Wife and I used to go over there to eat out often. Definitely astros game. NASA stuff down there is cool if you have never do any of that.
In the Galleria area there a three I like a lot. Papacitos for great Tex Mex. The Matador nachos are 3 pounds of gooey perfection. On Richardson is Lulling City Market for beer and excellent brisket. Antoine's on San Felipe is a Lebanese sandwich shop. The original is my favorite and it comes with mayo and slaw. Add Greek olives and it's totally different than anything here. There are so many great places it's hard to go wrong.

Someone give this guy a sandwich shop suggestion... He may end up trying too many Mexican joints for an untrained gut.

It takes years for your gut to handle the Mexican food in Houston. Lupe Tortilla from back in 09' cost me my gallbladder. Get some seafood and BBQ recommendations to the OP. Houston is known to produce the strongest cases of Montezuma's Revenge north of the Jalisco state in Mexico.

El Real.l for Tex Mex. It's in an old theatre. Very cool. Been doing it a long time.
If you want fancy and expensive you can go across the street to Georgia James. I ate there last night. GQ named it the best new restaurant in the country in 2019, fwiw. The chef was on that Netflix series...can't think of the name.
For BBQ I would do Goode Company. Great brisket and the pecan pie is the best I've had.

It's Crawfish season so you get a to Crawfish and Noodles or LA Crawfish and get some VietCajun Crawfish.
If you like real Chinese, drive down to Bellaire and hit up Mala. Get the Spicy Crispy Chicken, or the Kung Pao.
Pappasitos is really good.
Or Pappadeauxs if you want some cajun food.

Yes, the oil field, i.e. an economic catalyst, which can possibly happen one day in Jackson.
The point is that Houston is bleh city, in a bleh area, with bleh leadership, with bleh planning, with no real discernible attributes except big time employment, which can happen anywhere.
I do not think you fully understand the point I am making. The employers in Houston did not choose it because it was some mecca. The hurricane in Galveston forced many people to move there, then it just happened based on shipping and oil, which led to wealth, then many other options which exist today.
