I'm getting my house repainted. Painters use Sherwin Williams paints.

Is the upgrade to Duration ($300) or Emerald ($400) worth it? Which is better for painting Hardy board?

Mrs Bite works for the Sherwin. She says use the Duration without a doubt. Everything we own has Duration on it.

She said that Duration has been around longer. As far as she is concerned the jury is still out on Emerald but we have a lot of SW stock so every little bit helps. She said that she knows Duration will last longer than 99% of people will like that particular color.

Been very pleased with Superpaint interior and exterior. Covers well and seems to last well. Ask your painters their opinion. Sometimes if they spray, the thickness of the Duration and Emerald make it tough to deal with, from what I've read.

Every professional painter I ever met used Benjamin Moore. It's more expensive, but supposed to be the best paint there is. Always seemed to be the paint of choice by the professionals.

That must be a small circle... SW Duration is the 800lb Gorilla of exterior paint on new construction. It's legit. I have been to hundreds of new construction job sites and SW is by far the most popular brand. Not knocking Benjamin Moore, but Duration is proven and I trust the new home builders that have to warranty that work for a couple of years.

However, it can be difficult to spray. Texture-wise it’s like yogurt. If your painter is great and they have used duration before, use it. See if you can go see some of their precious work. If you’re unsure with your painter, I’d use super paint and spray the hell out of it.

I hope to have our house built by the end of the year and it’s going to be hardy. I’ll be using super paint and spraying it myself. I called my construction old boss and asked him what he thought and he even said super paint. Bottom line, you can’t go wrong with either. Just don’t use emerald.

We've been using Benjamin Moore "Aura" and I hope it's good because it cost too damn much. So far it seems OK.

Are you going to spray before or after the roof is on? I've seen several houses that were repaints and they sprayed paint all over the edge of the roof shingles. Looked terrible. I've seen it not only here, but in the Atlanta area as well.

After. Those painters suck. I’ll use a spray shield. I’d do side jobs with my boss on weekends and sprayed exterior a few times. Spray shield should allow that to not happen. And I’ll have tin, so if it did it would be easier to remove than shingles.

My nonbrick exterior is all done with Duration. Great stuff. Wash it every year and looks great

My two cents - I repainted my entire house last year before selling it. I’ve always used duration and did again in every room up till the last, the master bathroom. Supposedly they messed up and mixed me a gallon of emerald. I don’t remember why, maybe they were out of duration or it was simply a screw up. They charged me the duration price but gave me emerald.

After painting 90% of my house using duration, there was a noticeable difference with the emerald. Went on thicker and smoother. Looked much nicer. That’s all I’ll use now. It covers better and the final product looks better.

I’m just a diy painter now, but I used to help my dad remodel homes back in highschool 20+ years ago so I do have a good bit of experience painting. At the least, I’d recommend it in your main rooms (kitchen & living room, bathrooms too since they tend to be smaller and only need 1 gallon). May go with the duration in bedrooms

Either one is good, so just pick one and stick with it. If you don't want to be messing around with painting your house again in 5 years, use the good stuff, whether it's Sherwin Williams, BM, or anything. So to answer your question, yes, the upgrade is worth it.

I'd probably go Duration, because normally I try to use quality materials without going crazy.

We are finishing up a new home build. We used Duration. As mentioned several times above, it was the paint choice the pros suggested we use. I asked several painters and didn’t just take the word of the contractor. It was recommended every time.
