Anyone have recommendations for home surveillance system? I need 3-4 cameras, all outdoors, a dvr (maybe a week's worth of recording), remote access (web and/or iPhone), and I ain't made of money.

Watcha got?

I use Vivint. It's kind of pricey though. I have a camera on my front entry and back entry plus a motion detector in my living room. I can view a live stream on my phone of my cameras at anytime. It automatically records any motion detection or a doorbell pressed for 30 seconds.

I installed a system on my house. All Poe (power over Ethernet) cameras so on have one cat 5 wire per camera for power and video. I have hikvision cameras about 150 each and a hikvision nvr (network video camera). Real easy to set up to view live on my phone. Nvr prices vary based on number of cameras and memory size. I ordered mine from B&h photo video.

I bought a couple Arlo cameras at Costco for like $150. Battery powered, have a week's worth of video storage in the cloud for free. They only record when they sense motion, but you can set how long they record for. They seem to work fine and were really easy to set up. No audio with them, but also no monthly fee for the basic plan.

I use guardzilla ...they are $89 per camera at Walmart or online.....I have an app on my phone and iPad and I can veiw any camera at any time. It's motion sensitive and an alarm goes off when there is motion and the system is armed. You can sign up for 7.99 and have 30 days of rolling recording.

I live in a house with a lot of new construction around, and some *** kept running turning around in our driveway and running over the sprinkler head... so we decided to catch him.

I got the Arlo pro which includes sound and can be set to record on sound as well as motion.
I got the two camera system - one for the front door and one mounted on the second story looking out over the driveway.
The best part is that there's no power or network drops required.

The one at the door works great. Records crystal clear audio and video and you can even use it as a two way if someone's standing there. Also only needs to be charged about once every 6 months or so.
The one over the driveway works, but I haven't been able to fine tune the settings yet - either it records too often (leaves or insects going by) which causes the camera goes about 7-10 days before it needs to be charged again; or when I adjust the sensitivity it misses too much.

All in all, it's a good system - I get alerts on my phone for my door - and I have it setup to not alert for the driveway - and can look in live if I need to in 720p.

I haven't done any of the outdoor stuff yet and that may still be in development, but Abode is the hottest new thing out there and is exploding. The home security has been flawless for me, it has home automation integration, geo fencing, and a host of other things at a low cost. You can do it all self monitored on your phone if you want or they have live monitoring too. I pay 20 per month for cell backup and professional monitoring.

Edit to add I've seen people use Arlo with Abode through IFTTT which may be most cost effective, but Abode has native integration with Nest too and others

Samsung 4 camera unit at Sam's $300 give or take. We have it and it works great. 1 T storage keeps records of all 4 cameras for over a week. has motion alarms and cellphone link.

I sell them, and handle all installs and service for the state of MS, Western AL, and Eastern LA for 27 national brand companies. I have Axis IP cameras and a video server on my house, but for the money, you can't beat these. I'm not a dealer for Swann, because we only handle very high-end commercial, but they are solid. Samsung's video security unit was recently sold. They are going through some transitions. I'd hold off on those Sam's Club systems for now. The hardware is still OK, but they are having some problems with their DDNS service, for remote access into the systems.

I have no clue what system my parents use, but they were visiting me in Texas over a Memorial Day and my dads phone goes off, sounding like a doorbell. Turns out they've installed a camera in their doorbell. And someone had walked up and took a package off the steps at the back door. He called the local Missouri police from Texas, emailed them the video it took, and the cops caught the group of kids who stole the package less than an hour later. Those little ***** opened the package and threw the contents in the ditch, too. Apparently, the market for a curado reel is slim for those guys....
