Love watching Neumann and the Flex offense. Screens and continual motion. Can run a special 'wrinkle' play here and there.

The 5-out spread...read...react...almost no picks (rolls)... really limits the role of a mid-range shooter who can shoot off of screens and also diminshes post-post action. No thanks. Maybe as a stall game or to mix things up, on occasion...

Agreed on the flex. When run well, it's poetry in motion. There's a lot of teams that don't use screens well. A screener should never get called for an illegal screen. That's all on the other person imo.

Flex, when run well, is only a matter of time before someone is wide open. The minute the defense thinks they have it figured out or cheats, you get killed somewhere else.

Agree totally. Here's hoping for a comeback. Right now, with so few screens being set, i would imagine it would really tax a defense to have the heads on swivels more, looking for picks. From a teamwork perspective, i also like the idea of players helping each other out with picks. 5 out tends to be more of a one-on-one fest. Many of the shots that are in the paint and look great on a shot chart are low-percentage, because of degree of difficulty, traffic, etc.

Flex was fun to run, as a player, for the reason you mentioned...cheaters. Very burnable.

What? You don't like the PG power pounding his dribble in the same area and then passing it around up top till 2 seconds on the clock and then throwing up a wild three? You must not be a fan of Miles.

A 33% 3 point attempt is as valuable as a 50% midrange or post player, it takes a 60% midrange or post player to equal a 40% 3 point shooter. The game has figured out the math, spread the floor with shooters and it you don’t get the shot drive it.

The 5 out is definitely a mixed bag. It forces you to be aggressive on the offensive end in one on one situations or you won’t play, but yes it doesn’t do much for development of a mid range game. I agree that you could have a great mid range shooter who could totally struggle finding their role and being utilized in that system.

Some coaches who run it can/will sacrifice basketball IQ for athleticism. I’ve seen an awful lot of “Harden Ball” as I call it with teams who run it, and those teams might have a player who goes off for 25 points, yet their team loses by 30.

If you don’t have legit 3 point shooters you can get totally shut down by a 2-3 zone, and a well run 3-2 zone can lead to a lot of steals and uncontested layups.

If you can slow the game down you can really frustrate 5 out teams.

I hate that it leaves little room for the sharp shooter (Reggie Miller type) that just needs the aid of a pick here or there to light it up. That type of player is screwed. Kind of like the fullback position... bummer. Thankfully, there is YouTube and vintage Celtics v Nicks v Pistons v Lakers footage.:D
