Thinking about flying to Maui, staying 3 days and then spending 2 days in Kauai. Anybody been to either and would you recommend it?

The Princeville on Kauai. Where we had our honeymoon and it was simply beautiful. Breakfast buffet with all the fresh fruits was something I still remember. Golf courses are first rate if you play golf....

We celebrated our 10th anniversary in Hawaii (partly because I had a gig on Oahu). Went to Maui afterward. On Maui, consider Kihei instead of Lahaina. When we were there Kihei was less developed, less touristy, and less expensive. Of course, it's been almost 14 years since our 10th anniversary... time flies. It may be all the same now.

The Road to Hana is a treacherous drive. It's nice to say you did it, but it made me nervous the whole time. Better idea: Sunrise on Haleakala.

While visiting Lahaina, consider seeing my magician friend Warren at his club, Warren & Annabelle's.

Have fun!

The road to Hana is exhausting. It’s cool to say I’ve done it but I will never do it again when we go back

I agree with this. We did some of the road and turned around. I did enjoy Maui just because it didn’t seem as crowded and was far less urbanized than Oahu. Honolulu is LA on an island and the traffic is terrible. Enjoyed Pearl Harbor but that was enough for me.

We did the Hawaii honeymoon but stayed on Oahu. Honolulu was very busy. Maui or Kauai might be better and not as populated if you are looking for more quiet and secluded. Lots of stuff to do. I got a really great deal on Oahu so that’s we went there instead of one the other islands.Long flight over there as we flew out of Atlanta. Are you thinking of boating or flying between islands? We stayed for 8 days. Wish we would have done a couple more islands but I also enjoyed just traveling around the one island I felt like 8 days wasn’t enough. Have fun.

I recommend the big island for at least a few days. It's a lot more chill than the others and there is some cool **** to do there.

Kauai North Shore is the best place in Hawaii, IMO
https://www.gohawaii.com/islands/kauai/regions/north-shore
Great short hike at end of road at Ke e Beach

https://www.hcr.com/accommodations/

Resort has it's own remote beach. Also a short Walk or ride to Tunnels Beach.
Great snorkeling and surfing here.

This is a must on the Napali Coast

Hanalei Bay is an awesome little town with good restaurants and bars.

My wife and I literally got married on Maui and honeymooned on Kauai. Ka'anapali Beach on Maui, then stayed at the Coco Palms Resort on Kauai. Sadly, the Coco Palms was demolished by a hurricane and no longer exists.

More to do on Maui, but also more touristy. Kauai was very laid-back, much more quiet, but also a lot less to do. Good for a romantic getaway. Also really good for surfing.

First, congratulation.

About Hawaii - and know I watch my money - I spent more for a week in Hawaii than I did for thirteen days in Italy. Glad I went, but Paris would be cheaper.

I travel out there for work (don't be jealous, it's fly out, spend 14 hr days in a concrete box, fly home).

But in the limited amount of free time I've had, here's my take on Kauai:
There are two Kauai, east side (nice, tropical) and west side (arid, semi-desert). Most of the main stuff is in Lihue; shops, Costco, etc. Best thing in Lihue is Duke's restaurant. MUST DO! And yes, you want to split the Hula Pie. I don't care how full you are...

Poipu is where I typically stay. Nice, not quite as expensive as the north shore.

Must see:
Drive up Waimea Canyon. You will pass through five climate zones, which is pretty unique. Be sure to plan extra time and stop at the coffee plantation on the way there or back. Don't buy the coffee, tho, get it at Walmart for half. Same with any trinkets, macadamia nuts, etc.

If you want to see the Jurassic Park part of the island, need to plan a helicopter ride. In fact, this is probably the best money you can spend on Kauai. Buy the LONG tour.

Have fun!

Both are fantastic

Kauai - we like the south shore near Poipu. Good beaches, you can take a catermaran up to the Napali coast out of a marina not far from there. The Grand Hyatt is nice. We stayed once at the Marriott resort in Lihue. It's a great location because you can drive to the north and south shore relatively easily, but the hotel is old.

Maui- we love the Four Seasons. Adult pool, enough said. The Lahaina area definitely has more going on, but we would not trade it for staying in the Wailea area. You should eat at the Lahaina Grill and sesame seed crusted ahi in a vanilla bean rice...amazing. Mama's fish house is a must stop.

I literally just got back from Kauai 6 days ago. My wife and I are blessed to have travelled to many countries lately and I’ve gotta say Kauai made top 5 of our destinations we’ve been to. It’s is not touristy at all and a lot of it is untouched.

As the other poster stated, Princeville is where you want to stay as that’s where you’ll get the best views of mountains and beaches. We stayed in Kapa'a at the courtyard marriot and it had the best central location to be able to go north or south on the island, but when we go back we will stay in Princeville. Plenty of things to do!

Maui is great, but touristy. Road to Hana is ok, but get a 4x4 Jeep and take the backside of the (dormant) volcano (Haleakala) for the return trip. Since I was there for the Ironman (Big Island), we had bikes and rode up to the top of Haleakala to see the sunrise. Very tough climb, but worth it. The descent is awesome.

Kauai is my favorite Hawaii island. Not as developed and amazing diversity. We stayed in a cabin in the middle of a rain forest that was very cheap ($), had geckos running around, torrential downpours every night, etc…was amazing. Na Pali Coastline is the most epic hike EVER. We were forewarned that do not be surprised if you come across people just hiking naked, as they get so caught up in the beauty of the place. Sure enough, saw some blonds from Europe doing such. J Great camping too. Waimea Canyon (The Grand Canyon of the Pacific) was a nice hike, a bit taxing for the non-athletes as we had a couple with us that were suffering.

Too many things to mention, but both islands are great. I would try to stay longer in Kauai than Maui though.

Aloha.

Honeymooned on Maui for 10 days. Spent the first part of the trip at the Four Seasons in Wailea. This was the finest resort that I have ever visited by a wide margin. Unfortunately, it costs a small fortune to stay there, but hey, you only get married once or twice or thrice. We spent the latter part of our stay in a Balinese style home in Hana overlooking the ocean. Hana is super cool once you get there. The drive is white knuckle to say the least, but the views are unlike anything else that I have ever seen. If you choose Maui, I would highly recommend the book, Maui Revealed. This book was our "go to" during our visit for restaurants(Mama's Fish House was our favorite) and activities(Catamaran trip on Ali Nui was the highlight). We were there in 2005; so, I am sure much has changed since our visit. I personally prefer the Caribbean, mainly due to cost and ease of travel, but everyone should visit Hawaii at least once in their lifetime.
