No being intentionally obtuse is what you're doing. While trying to make this thread controversial where there's nothing of the sort here. Bringing up the whole Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays thing in this thread is like bringing up Easter on the 4th of July.
If you haven’t realized it yet, this is just the type of thread that draws all the ignorant tools out from under their rocks. Instead of one the one hand, offering something positive, or on the other hand, ignoring the thread entirely, they feel the need to offer some cynical or snide commentary. They simply can’t help themselves.

And there is one big, fat, orange common denominator for all of these folks..

Actually, wasn't the biggest fan at all of 44. But b.s. is b.s. and being unwilling to do simple Google searches for facts is why we have a brand new, thriving "Lügenpresse!" crowd in the likes of you.

I didn't say anything about Obama hating on Christmas.

I've also never been bothered by Alt-Left loons who calls others Nazis.

It just tells me that they have some internal hatred themselves so I ignore them

It is easy for us Northerners to feel a sense of moral superiority on the slavery issue. But NJ does not have a proud history on the issue.

Slavery was not officially banned in NJ until 1846, which for a northern state was very late. But even then, de facto slavery continued, as some slaves were legally redefined as "indentured servants for life". Or some slaveowners simply sold their slaves to Southern buyers, rather than free them. It wasn't until passage of the 13th Amendment that slavery was truly ended in NJ.

How come some threads are getting unlocked? Seems like some censorship is going on here

Pretty cool.

Two questions:

- How do I pronounce it without sounding stupid?
- What's on the menu? Love to sample on these * holidays, especially the desserts.

* EXCEPT lamb on Easter like they do in my Wife's family. Yuck.

Thread unlocked? Am I the only one here who watches "Blackish"? Happy Juneteenth.
I used to watch it off and on but I stopped keeping up as I do with most weekly shows. I think I might have seen an episode they did on it.

Because it never should have been sabotaged or attempted to spin into some sort of political topic.

I agree don’t know who sabotaged it. I just don’t ever remember hearing about it before this year. I think the whole reason we are hearing about it now is for political reasons. It’s getting very unfortunate that politics are in so much now that they weren’t as much before. Sports especially

The town I live in celebrates it but it is not a holiday for municipal workers. Been aware of it for decades, although my HS texts were silent about it.

We've had local Juneteenth parades and celebrations for about a decade. Its usually a pretty cool celebration - and with an actual history and tradition.

Cinco de Mayo was contrived by Corona and other beverage makers. They saw a gap in spring holidays with no beer sales, so they pimped a minor Mexican battle anniversary as if it was Mexican Independence Day (September 16). Americans fell right in line (few are as easy to market to as Americans). Imagine Bud getting Mexicans to buy beer on anniversary of Gettysburg?

Juneteenth is legit, but its already being co-opted by the rainbows and Marxist hustlers trying to steer it. Anyone "suffering" persecution participates in "blackness" the kooks say. That's the Marxist take. Venezuela coming at you

Having June 19th as a holiday makes more sense than pretty much anything I’m hearing in connection with recent events.

how is it that the MSM has not made a big deal of Juneteenth every year? I am in the New York market and have never seen it mentioned until this year.

So.. if this becomes an official holiday.. what current holiday is on the chopping block? Remember Lincoln's and Washington's BDays were combined to Presidents' Day to make room for MLK Day.

New Year's Day 01/01/2020 Wednesday
Martin Luther King Jr. Day 01/20/2020 Monday

I first heard of it earlier this week.

I don't remember it celebrated nationally from 2008-2016.

Was it a regional holiday and recently became national?

I believe TX celebrated it for quite a while. I'm up for another paid day off. I'd also like to congratulate all of the freed slaves on their newly won freedom!

I would say Columbus Day is the obvious choice. It’s a pretty innocuous holiday and the current statue toppling aside, would it really be missed?

As someone else mentioned, Columbus Day will likely be gone this year. My company has already begun these discussions. Thanksgiving is the most likely after that given the way the Pilgrams took over the land. And with no football, what’s the point anyway.

Since no one should be afforded willful ignorance on this: June 19, 1865 is the date attributed to the final freeing of slaves in the Confederate states. Slaves were nominally freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, but they weren't actually freed until Union soldiers arrived to enforce the Proclamation. The last state where this happened was Texas. Union soldiers got to Galveston Texas on June 19 with two messages - the war was over, and the slaves were freed.

Slavery continued in the Border states which remained loyal to the Union. Slavery was not finally abolished in the US until December 18, 1865, when the 13th Amendment was ratified. But June 19 is the traditional day of celebration, one in which all Americans can proudly share.
Delaware, a slave/border state that stayed in the Union, did not ratify the 13th Amendment (ending involuntary servitude), until 12FEB1901. As pointed out above, slavery ended effectively in DEC1865, even in Del.

And this is why we have a big problem in our country. So ugly - "newly won freedom" really?

I think this is a pivotal moment in our country's history. Perhaps the election of Trump was the catalyst needed to finally make us come to terms with our racist past - our country was built on the backs of enslaved people. To this day the discrepancy in wealth can be traced back in many instances to "old money" that came from exploitation of unpaid labor. During the 1920s and 1930s the violence against African Americans was absolutely unbelievable, then African Americans served our country in WW2 only to return to more racism. The fight continued in the 1960s and here we are 60 years later and the fight goes on. Sad

Columbus didn’t even discover America. He was so dumb he called the natives “Indians” because he thought he was in India. There were others who got hear before him not just Lief Erickson.

Juneteenth makes 10x’s more sense to me than celebrating that clown. He was a horrible person.

Btw back then other explorers also knew the world was not flat so he didn’t discover that either that’s an old tail schools made up too.

Yes mostly deep southern states celebrated it, sad to say as a Black Man I found out about it in 1993 while in the air force down at flight school in Wichita Falls. It just wasn't big up here thinking because there were no slaves up north.....
