Why do you think it would be locked? If it said Happy Passover or Happy Cinco De Mayo etc I don't think it would be even a thought. Those threads don't warrant locking either.
Agreed, but posters also don’t say things like “I’m glad I don’t know what this is” in response to a Happy Cinco De Mayo day. So I’m afraid this thread will end in a lock. It shouldn’t, but that’s the way of this board these days.

Well sometimes you just have to consider the source. But with the moderators here (not meaning Rich, Chris) you could be right.

Since no one should be afforded willful ignorance on this: June 19, 1865 is the date attributed to the final freeing of slaves in the Confederate states. Slaves were nominally freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, but they weren't actually freed until Union soldiers arrived to enforce the Proclamation. The last state where this happened was Texas. Union soldiers got to Galveston Texas on June 19 with two messages - the war was over, and the slaves were freed.

Slavery continued in the Border states which remained loyal to the Union. Slavery was not finally abolished in the US until December 18, 1865, when the 13th Amendment was ratified. But June 19 is the traditional day of celebration, one in which all Americans can proudly share.

Why are you asking me?

I am for free speech

You leftys are about stifling free speech and cancelling

I simply never heard of the holiday until this week and asked a question
No being intentionally obtuse is what you're doing. While trying to make this thread controversial where there's nothing of the sort here. Bringing up the whole Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays thing in this thread is like bringing up Easter on the 4th of July.

Although June 19th is not the anniversary of the actual end of slavery, which came with the passage of the thirteenth amendment on Dec. 6th, the Holiday celebrates emancipation and corresponds with the date the last slaves in the Confederacy were freed by Union troops in Texas.

Okay. I'm not being ignorant. I honestly have never heard of this.

I had never heard of it until yesterday, and to be honest that's a complete lack of awareness on my part and a bit of an indication of where we are as a nation in understanding black history and plight. Of all the holidays we have, how was this marginalized for so long?

This should be a layup for everyone wanting to celebrate this day and giving it the recognition it deserves.

This Southern boy has known about Juneteenth for 40 plus years. It IS a Big deal, as it should be.

Trump did NOT make it famous, Trump just heard about it this month.

As did most of the country.

It's good to be educated about our history without being scolded for not knowing something that was never discussed until this month.

That's not directed at you SG.

I'm a big history buff

We are doomed to repeat our mistakes of the past if we don't know our history.

Totally agree.

On topic, it's incredibly sad that monsters are desecrating Lincoln statues and memorials.
