OT: Good tv show/movie recs

I'd like to find a good show to get into. I have most streaming services except Apple TV & Hulu, but would get them if they're worth it.

Mare of Easttown is excellent as is Sopranos (both HBOMax). GOT (HBOMax) has some good seasons, but fell apart at the end. Outer Banks (Netflix) is a fun show. Peanut Butter Falcon is a good movie (not sure what channel(s)). The Irishman and The Highwaymen (both on Netflix) are good. Cobra Kia (netflix) and Yellowstone (network?) are good and about to release new seasons.

I wanted to like big sky but after I really like the books it was based on it was hard for me to watch it with a lot of the differences they made. I understand that's the way it works I just really liked the book version. Cliche I know.

Clarkson's Farm on Amazon Prime. Killing Eve on Hulu (or I think BBCA on demand, if you have YoutubeTV). Foundation on Apple TV has been pretty good so far.
Counterpart, which was on Starz, but now on Amazon Prime is also pretty decent.
Pretty much everything from the HboMax back catalog: Mare, Leftovers, Boardwalk Empire, The Alienist, Whitechapel.

Netflix: Squid Game is worth it. I prefer the subbed over the dubbed.

Amazon: Invincible. The Boys. After the end of the first episode of each you get hooked.

A friend of mine recommended Wind River (movie) for me on Netflix it is really good.

Helluva good movie. Jeremy Renner is great but Elizabeth Olsen is surprisingly good.

In case you didn't see my recommendation awhile back. Loudermilk on Amazon Prime. Clarkson's Farm I agree with wholeheartedly. Only Murders in the Building on Hulu. A movie on Prime named Cosmos (from 2019) is worth watching.

Enjoyed The White Lotus on HBO Max. Not sure what I was expecting, but it was surprisingly funny and just well written and executed.

Steve Zahn is hilarious.

There’s Peaky F’n Blinders and then there is everything else.


Hell on Wheels and Mad Men were solid shows. Billions and The Wire are excellent. Agree on Succession, it’s solid, I’d give it a B. It’s not in the range of Boardwalk Empire, Ozark, Breaking Bad. Bloodline is another good one, but they butchered up the final season, still.a good watch.


but if you have seen Peaky Blindeds, make sure no kids are around, open a pint with a few more on ice, turn on the CC until you get used to the accents, then sit back and enjoy. Seasons are only 5-6 episodes and only 5 seasons with a 6th and final season in post filming production concluding soon. Word is that a there is a movie in the works with a possible spin off coming.

Billions is one of my favorites. The storyline went a little crazy this season though. They need to get back to basics.

Can't wait for Narcos to drop. I think it might be a while for better call saul since Odenkirk is still recuperating. I think we almost lost him.


I will confirm that Loudermilk is a great show. I've always liked Ron Livingston in various roles he has acted.

I haven’t yet forced myself to give Lasso a chance because I don’t do soccer, and I have a very particular sense of humor that finds most comedies boring. However, when something wins like 25 Emmy awards, it makes me think I should probably look into it

Maid on Netflix is a 10 episode series that was just released and is really good. Its not a comedy, its not happy, but its really a really solid story and acting. Andie MacDowell is fantastic as her character, and her real life daughter is excellent as the main character.

The Expanse (Amazon Prime) is a show I'd recommend. It's a good sci-fi based ~300 years into the future where humans have already colonized Mars and the Asteroid Belt.

 

[Xenomorph]

The Expanse is great.. especially those early seasons. Also.. if you've never watched Firefly, it's on Hulu. It's the show that made Joss Whedon (along with Buffy).

Random side note, but while we’re on the SciFi topic, I really hate that they killed Altered Carbon. The first season was fantastic, and then they just basically re-shuffled the entire cast, and it didn’t work

The Flight Attendant (HBO Max) - both me and the missus really enjoyed... my vote for best series in last 2 years
Ted Lasso (Apple TV) - feel good show; hardly shows any soccer; almost British humor
Mythic Quest (Apple TV) - somewhere between Grandmas Boy and Silicon Valley; mindless entertainment
Silicon Valley (HBO Max) - terrific nerd comedy
Ballers (HBO Max) - its a caricature of the NFL underworld, but entertaining
The Mandalorian (Disney) - for the inner Star Wars nerds
Arrested Development (HBO) - if you never watched, you need to do so

Big Sky started strong, but has gotten progressively worse. This past week's episode was damn near unwatchable.

Billions is amazing... Somewhat but not really a spoiler so I will keep typing to not have this in the title but... The 'fight' between $ Bill and Axe was one of the most brilliant pieces of television ever filmed.

I'm down to the last episode of Ted Lasso. Really good show. Stands out with its positivity and likable characters. I'm on a free trial of Apple TV+. I haven't tried their other shows yet.

Cobra Kai (Netflix) is fun, especially if you loved the Karate Kid movies.
Loudermilk (Amazon Prime) is very good.
Peyton's Places on ESPN+ is fun and light-hearted. I've only watched a couple of episodes of Eli's Places (more of a college football focus), but they were fun too.
I know it's controversial, but I enjoyed Masters of the Universe Revelation on Netflix.
Stranger Things on Netflix.
Yellowstone is on Peacock. It has its ups and downs, but it's worth watching.
Mandalorian and any of the Marvel series on Disney+.

I'll echo the votes for Mare of Easttown, Ted Lasso, Mythic Quest and Only Murders in the Building.

I also like WandaVision and Loki. Falcon and the Winter Soldier was OK but I liked the other two better.
