is Gotgear in Ridgeland the best place to get a go kart for kids? Seems like there should be more options around here. Google says Jackson Motor Sports is an option, but thats really about it. Some online retailers that seem sketchy and a place in Byram called AAA sports.

Anything else? Is that really it around here? And I got priced about $2500 for an entry level kind of go kart for kids. That doesnt seem crazy, but seems a little high.

Any advice is appreciated.

I know you are looking in the Jackson area but I think their used to be a company that made gokarts in West Point called Flexible Flyer. They may have an online presence too.

If you don't mind driving south, take a look at Hattiesburg Cycles. They have many options in terms of size -- and any color you may want. We just purchased one there and ended up paying around $2400 all in, with the kart around $1900, plus dealer setup fees and MS sales tax.

But do your homework before you go and have a pretty good idea of what you want -- manufacturer, engine size, harness type, reverse gear, weight limit, etc. Most of the guys I've dealt with there have been very nice, but that doesn't mean they're experts on go-karts. So don't depend on them to necessarily put you in the "right" one for your kids.

And FWIW, I tried dealing with GotGear a couple of years ago when purchasing an ATV, and the entire experience was laughable. I could never get anyone to return my calls and their general attitude communicated that they didn't give a **** if they sold anything or not. It was so bad that I vowed never do business with them. YMMV.

PM me if you need more info.

Blackwell's Outdoor in Hammond is a good place for stuff like that. http://blackwellsoutdoor.com/. It is a pretty easy drive over there and they have a good selection and prices. They have a youth model UTV we got last year...It's a Hammerhead 150 and engine is made by Polaris.

For just a basic go cart you can get a Coleman KT-196 for about $1300 at Tractor Supply. Amazon also sells them so you can read the reviews. It comes with a Honda clone 196cc engine which is used on everything from generators, lawn mowers, log splitters ...... So parts are a plenty or you can buy a replacement engine at Harbor Freight for $100.

Speaking as a parent who's been down this road, I'd get a 4 wheeler or dirtbike. Between myself & my brother we have gone through all these. My brother's sons are older & his first purchase was a gocart. Problem was all their friends had 4 wheelers & his sons tried to follow them. Trails were too narrow, muddy, too much of a incline, etc. They basically could only ride in their yard & kept it a mess. The result is their gocart stayed broken most of the time. After being broken constantly they just got tired of repairing & sold it for nothing less than 2 years after purchase. I bought my son a Yamaha ttr50 dirt bike when he was 6. I work in the medical field, you don't see deaths or serious injuries on a dirt bike, unlike a 4 wheeler. If you wreck a 100lb dirt bike, it usually goes one direction & you go another. Unlike a 450lb-1000lb 4 wheeler often lands on top of you. My son & daughter rode the dirt bike til it they outgrew it. Then we graduated to a Yamaha 250 4 wheeler, that I still have to this day (10 years later). My advise is to buy a used gocart, if you get one. They won't last & have horrible resale value.

$2500 for a yard kart? Holy 17. I can get you a used racing kart that will go 100 mph for that.
