As someone who isn't a Giant fan I would say the trade return for OBJ is more fair than most people are complaining about, but the Giant strategy is incredibly contradictory.

With Saquon and OBJ you should fix the QB position and try to be good. Getting rid of OBJ means you are in effect rebuilding and drafting Saquon last year was a mistake, because you are going to waste most of his best, cheapest years on a bad team.

He’s obviously a great talent. I think when he grows up he will be a dominant player on winning teams. If the Giants had an OL last year the numbers we have been staggering for OBJ. However, what I saw was a QB and OC who tried too hard to keep him happy which cost us some games. That’s where he needs to grow up. If he didn’t touch the ball once every 2-3 plays he was sulking and his body language was awful. He’s a competitive guy and needs to touch the ball. Maybe he will more in Cleveland.

#17 pick, 3rd rounder, Peppers. Thought the haul would have been a lot bigger

If Raiders got 2 1st rounders for Mack, Giants should have done better
Don't forget the solid safety starter. Man they did so good.
When OBJ started his crap the whole team changed with him.
I never saw attitude problems on the Giants like this, never.

Forget about receiving more for OBJ. The problem with this deal is that the Giants won't be getting a game breaker in return, an elite WR that opposing D's will need to game plan around.
OBJ wasn't a game breaker, more like team buster.

It's not trading obj that's the problem. Its how everything went down. If we were going to trade him for peanuts, why even extend his contract in the first place. We shouldve traded him last year. Gettleman is an fing moron. Flood level moron. Its unbelievable. And that's just what he did for OBJ

Giants fan here. I've said it for years that teams with prominent personalities like obj don't win superbowls. I never expected him to get one as a giant, and don't expect him to get one as a brown. The giants suddenly became good after shockey and tiki left. The pats abhor big personalities. The Steelers couldn't win one with AB and LB. The eagles, though, won with lunch pail files.

Rob Gronkowski is probably the biggest personality in the league. Hosts cruises aimed at middle aged women, makes 69 jokes at every opportunity, and gets away with making sex references to every female reporter he encounters, which would get OBJ kicked out of the league if he had tried the same thing.

Great point. RB is a final piece, not a guy you take at the start of a rebuild. Gettleman is a mistake. The Mara's have lost their way. Why would you hire a 66 year old Carolina cast away in the age of data and analytics, etc?

A bad Giants team ended with OBJ at WR and Collins at SS. They downgraded to Peppers at SS and no way they replace OBJ with that pick.

They just keep getting worse.

He was nowhere near the cancer people make him out to be. He is a phenomenal talent who loved the game and hated to lose. Beyond that, who really cares what he does? No one cared what LT did and it was magnitudes worse than anything this kid has been up to. You can't win with LT and then say you can't win with OBJ. It's just silly.

I hate NY sports. Thank God I was born a Yankees fan. It's all we got.

He is kinda like the David Ortiz of the NFL. Such a likable guy but does stuff others would get slack for. That being said, Im a 35 year Giants fan and this trade does hurt but deep down you knew something was bound to happen. As talanted as Odell is it seems the last two years we as Giants fans were making excuses for his actions. The video if him in the hotel, the interview with lil Wayne and so on. I just couldnt see it lasting another 5 years without this.
Do I feel the Giants got enough in return? No, but I guess only time will tell. Plus why sign the guy only to trade him less then a year later. 16 million in dead cap, 33 million total as a team to lead the league. Its like you want Odell to have the character of Saquon but he dosent. Gettleman needs to hit on this draft big time!!!

Not an OBJ fan, and not against trading him, but the guy is young and elite. How is this all you get for him???

He does seem to be the exception to every rule, both God's and man's, doesnt he.

The point is your premise of "Patriots don't like personalities" is at minimum wrong and at best nonsensical.

In addition to Gronk, the Patriots literally traded for Josh Gordon last year and won the SB - just like the Eagles did. A player out of the league for substance abuse problems.

What's dumb is the suggestion that last year's decision should dictate the path forward from now on. The plan changed from 'win now' to rebuild. Nothing wrong with that.

The overreaction to this trade is amazing.

I actually find the justifications amusing.
This board never ceases to amaze.

I would assume alot of the "Trade OBJ. Developing QBs dont need WRs" are also the same "Rutgers needs to establish the run, Northeast Football, no Big 12 crap!!" fans.

It is wrong because "win now" never made sense with Eli as QB.

Difference between Gronk and OBJ is once on the field, Gronk is no longer a personality. He’s all business.

Can’t say the same with OBJ, who’s look at me personality from off the field comes with him on the field. Big difference.

Cant compare the two deals. Mack is an edge rusher, Outside of the QB the edge rusher and left tackler are the most important positions.

I don't follow. The "win now" strategy was executed because they suspected Eli had 2 years left in the tank, so get him some weapons and run. They got exposed, and the 3-13 McAdoo disaster became a 5-11 Shurmur disaster, and everyone could see "win now" was a mistake. Own up to the mistake and burn it down now, don't double down on it.

It was either win now with Eli, or rebuild now with a rookie QB. It was never win now with the rookie.

Eagles
Chiefs
Rams
Bears
Cowboys
Houston
Patriots (not rookie but undervalued QB contract)
All playoff teams last year.

Win now with a rookie QB is exactly what you are supposed to do.
Take advantage of the cheap rookie QB contract to build rest of team.

Giants already had RB, WR in place.

The idea Eli had 2 years left was the problem from the beginning.

And what stud WR did the Bears have? Robinson? Hardly a star. Who did Dallas have before acquiring Cooper? No one. New England is in playoffs every year with a hodgepodge of WR.

Fact is teams can win without star WR.

Were those teams coming off a 3-13 season the year prior?
And in the interest of full disclosure, I was one of the few Giants fans annoyed they took Saquon Barkley instead of one of the quarterbacks.

On a side note (and actually is in favor of trading OBJ) - I heard an interesting nugget during all the AB discussions.
If you look at the list of greatest NFL WRs ever (and top WRs currently) - not a lot of Super Bowls winners.

It really is all about the QB and then go from there.

Totally agree. Because WR is probably the most high profile position..it’s very overvalued.

Replacing a stud WR is much easier than replacing a star on other positions.

And those complaining about the return, it was better than what PIT got from AB, probably a better WR the past few years than OBJ.

This trade isn’t nearly as bad as people are saying.

The jury's out until after the draft. People say none of the QBs available justify a #6 pick. We'll see. But the Giants could package #17 and some of the picks they have acquired to move up, but not to #6. Then they could use #6 for an edge rusher or DT in this year's strong class. Add OL and WRs in subsequent rounds with what they have left.

It's going to be an interesting draft weekend.
