So, the thread about the Jetsons’ truck got me to wondering......What are y’all’s opinions on gas burner or diesel?
My next vehicle is going to be a Super Duty Ford, likely an F250. I know everybody has their own opinion on the make, but I’d really like to hear from y’all about the pros and cons of the respective engines. I have a heavy work box that will be in the bed constantly, and I do occasional towing. No gooseneck because of my box, but I will likely be doing some heavier hauling for my sons’ high school band next fall. Fuel and maintenance costs worth it? I’d just like to hear what y’all have to say about it, and thanks in advance.

I currently drive diesel, Duramax, but I’ll probably never buy another. At the time I purchased I had a big camper and a big tractor that required a gooseneck to haul. I have since moved on from the pull type camper and downsized tractors to one that can be hauled on a bumper pull trailer so it’s really not needed. Diesel is much more expensive than gas and there is no longer a mileage advantage to the diesel. It’s more expensive to maintain and work on. If you put a lot of miles on a truck then there are advantages to the diesel but that’s just a personal decision. It was an itch I had to scratch but I’m over it now.

I have a 6.7 powerstroke and its a good truck but I will be getting a gas burner next time for the reasons dawgbite outlined above. About 100 thousand miles started having problems with the def and exhaust filter stuff. Got it deleted and havent had more issues ( im over 180k now) .

Ford has a 7.3l gas engine now so if it turns out to be good I may go with it in a few years

I've got a dodge with a Cummings and I love mine. The major repairs I had were not related to the engine. I don't use a truck to require a diesel but it's nice to have just in case. It's also my storm chase vehicle so it does get some miles out on it.

If you aren't doing heavy towing just get a 1/2 ton. Fuel costs. Diesel in box trucks or for guys towing heavy loads is the way to go, but not for every day drivers. Towing a band trailer is maybe 2500 lbs. Any full size 1/2 ton can handle that, even a 6 cylinder, just use the tow package.

If you’re not using it every day to tow and haul, then having a diesel is kinda pointless. If I didn’t need it to pull stuff I’d have a gas burner.

Gas burner. I’ve owned 5 diesels and loved them all but they were the MB 617, 12 valve Cummins, and 7.3. Even converted 2 to run on waste vegetable oil. But All of these were before emissions BS and the nuclear arms race of horsepower output. I’ve heard nothing but horror stories out of the latest. Head gaskets that can’t do one damn job. Turbos that **** the bed. Fuel pumps that implode and send metal particles all through the fuel system. $130 oil changes get old too. Diesels have their place but that place is no longer in my garage.

What’s crazy is diesel is a by product of gas. It should be much cheaper, but regulations targeting commercial use drives up the price.

You and DeSoto nailed it.
Today's diesels are less reliable than 20 years ago. They no longer make sense unless you're always pulling heavy loads.

Gas.
