OT - Flock Cameras

My initial thought is they are like ring cameras. I don’t want LEOs to just be able to look at the data generally. When there is a crime, giving them access to look at the location of the crime or nearby doesn’t bother me. Civil liability can protect against abuse by the private operators better than it can government entities. The problem with flock is the government entities are the customers, so they aren’t going to be resistant to handing the information over for any reason or no reason. But if a HOA or similar wants to put them in for their use, and the HOA has to be asked for the data, that wouldn’t be terrible. Would probably need some change in law saying there has to be a warrant to even ask unless the HOA reports a crime in their neighborhood.

But when they get to be everywhere, going to be a real danger of a government just using them regardless.

The more control the government has over you the more they want. No matter R or D, the result will be the same, less liberty and more restriction for all. At some point these will be used to issue traffic tickets will have facial recognition (if not already), etc. I want less government in my life, not more. That’s fine and dandy until YOU are the innocent victim handcuffed, tasered, and locked up in jail for days or weeks and your car towed and illegally impounded leaving you with thousands of dollars in attorney fees to pay while the police are never held accountable and they and their attorneys continue to be paid with your tax dollars to abuse you just to satisfy their enormous egos. If you want to know who the Sovereign Citizens are, they’re easy to recognize - they have guns, badges, handcuffs, and tasers and think the laws don’t apply to them - and they usually don’t.

Flock cameras make the job of law enforcement easier and safer.

1. bad guys usually don't lay down in one place more than six months. They use Mommas address on gov paper. Flocks make them easy to find while they are committing crime and try to hide from law enforcement.

2. When bad guys run, become fugitives, it's easy for LEOs to follow and track them without high speed chases. Or going to bad address after old addresses to find them.

3. Don't commit crime. Won't be a problem.

Know what would be easier and safer that that even. If the government just put a tracker on everyone complete with voice recording and video. That way when a bad guy did something, they know exactly where he is to go pick him up. Not to mention the evidence is right there on the tracker too. Don’t commit crime. Won’t be a problem.

In a vacuum, they're great. It's just an accumulation of data that is publicly observable. As long as we have license tags, we have no reason to expect privacy of where our vehicles are traveling. But people suck and can use data for nefarious purposes. I guess I need to research how my community uses them and who has access to that data and for what purposes.

True, most of us don't live in areas where we give much thought to crime. Heck i've worked in DT Jxn for 30+ years and never experienced any crime.

To rule out a law enforcement technique because there are errors is to eliminate law enforcement. No system involving technology or humans is going to be error free, but Flock cameras are almost certainly more reliable than eye witness testimony. The problem is that any power that can be abused will be abused, so you have to decide what power you can live with being abused. We historically have decided that the power for warrantless searches is too much power that will be abused. We've historically treated anything in public as not having an expectation of privacy. We may have to think about that in an era of mass data, mass surveilance, and AI.

I'm still undecided on flock cameras other than I don't want police having unfettered access to them. The real problem is that we don't have any accountability at the federal level. We're not good at it at the state level, but you do see cops being fired for abusing surveillance data and you have the federal option for lawsuits. The fact that nobody from the Obama or Biden administration suffered any consequences for abusing FISA, spying on journalists, spying on congressmen, etc., means we really, really shouldn't want the feds to have access to these, and the only way to prevent that may be to stop them from being up to begin with.

But, they do (or at least can) make a lot of people in poor and crime ridden areas safer. We're underpoliced in our most violent areas compared to other developed countries as far as actual beat walking policemen, and this technology could help offset that some. The people in those communities are going to bear the brunt of any overly aggressive surveillance but also are much more likely to be beneficiaries of it in the form of less victimization. I think I'd probably like to see them in the worst ares of places like Baltimore or Chicago and see what impact they have on crime rates. I'd also like to see them in some fringe areas to see if they help areas stall or reverse a decline. Would flock cameras help keep the tradeoffs of northeast jackson acceptable for the remaining holdouts? Or maybe help areas like around JA bounce back? I assume that data on the impact in areas like that is actually out there based if you can get data on on flock camera rollouts and compare it to crime data in those areas.
