OT- first time surgery

Having surgery on my knee and hand tomorrow morning- first time ever being under the knife.

Definitely afraid of being put to sleep. Gonna be stuck in recovery a couple days and out of shows to watch on Netflix/Hulu.

Any suggestions?

The Nightstalker was a really good documentary

After that relax pill it will be fine. Been under 3 times.
Watching the Blacklist on Netflix and I’m more interested in it now that I can binge. They don’t make cable shows like that anymore.

I wish I wasn’t in the know on this one but I’ve had north of 20. If you’re up drink as much as you can and eat a bite up in til midnight or a few mins later, as the dry mouth will set in well before they give you ice chips in recovery. They can’t do and eat a snack, you don’t hafta cut it all out at midnight, but I wouldn’t wait past 12:30. They won’t do it until the Dr comes around to talk to you but if you’re anxious get the nurse anesthetist to give you some “pre-opt” in your IV, it’ll calm you down some, depends on how strong your constitution is or it might let you doze off. If you’ve never had an IV, pump or squeeze your fist up until the last second then let go and let your hand/arm hang loose and look away. Not going to ask what you’re having done but the quicker they’ll let you get up and around the better you’ll do. It all depends on what they’re doing but normally the day after is rough, the 2nd day is normally your worst day and then you gradually start better.

Just relax and keep telling yourself it’ll be over sooner rather than later. Best of luck to you!

First surgery

I recommend the podcast, The Trials of Frank Carson— available on Apple, Spotify etc. several hours/installments. Fascinating true story about a criminal defense lawyer who became a target of the criminal justice system.

I hope your surgery goes well. I’ve had a significant surgery and it was much easier to deal with than I expected. I bet yours will be the same. Godspeed.

I’ve been watching Justified on Hulu. It’s a good binge show. It’s a bit unrealistic when you consider the amount of “officer involved shootings” the guy is a part of and never seems to be on paid leave, but I guess every other episode showing Rayln sitting at his desk or on his couch doesn’t make for good TV.

My favorite situation from Justified.
Raylen is facing 5 bad guys. The chief bad guy says "There's 5 of us and one of you. How do you think that's gonna go?" Raylen replies "I'll take 3 of you before you clear leather. The other 2 we'll just have to see."

Just had my hip fixed this week. Day of surgery I got home about 11am, slept the rest of the day. woke up about 6pm, feeling good and hungry. Bride had baked potatos (bland food for the patient, she said) and brought me one. I said " how about a little sour cream and cheese?"

It did not end well for me. Just stay hungry until the following morning. And/or keep a barf bucket handy.

Mine is Art going on this rant:

“First thing we’re going to do is acknowledge that this guy is awesome. He shoots Theo Tonin, fakes his death in a spectacular fashion, pushes a guy out of air airplane (while he’s flying it). Parachutes into Harlin County with enough coke and cash to jump start the economy of a small country. And then he has the balls to get a job in law enforcement, not once but two times! He spends a couple a days riding around with you while you’re looking for him. And now he’s run off with a hooker that’s half his age. That’s some bad *** ****.”

I've had many. Nothing to worry about, really. You'll sleep great, and wake up not realizing what even happened. Most times I've been talking to the nurse, then I'll blink a couple times and someone is waking me up. When I had my elbow done, I asked the nurse when we were going to get started and she said, "honey, you're finished."

Now recovery, that may be a little uncomfortable. This sounds cliché, but you really do need to "stay ahead of the pain" with the meds at first. If you delay in taking what they give you, or try to tough it out, once the pain sets in it's hard to catch back up. That was my experience, anyway. You've got the idea though - lay back for those couple of days, take the meds, and enjoy the nonsexual version of Netflix and chill.

I've been under a total of 14 times. Tell them how you feel and if you get a decent anesthesiologist they will give you something to relax you or just not give a ****. Are you going under general or IV meds?

Just remember to try and relax before and especially after and don't be afraid to tell them if you are hurting. You have plenty of time to be uncomfortable later.

Out of surgery. Boy that was a doozy. Luckily my sister has worked with the surgical team for over a decade so I was well taken care of.

Time to get on y’all’s entertainment suggestions! Thanks everyone

Quick question, has anyone had problems with stopping pain meds after surgery heals? My ortho gave me 6 weeks until my knee is mostly healed but I’m terrified of growing a dependency /addiction to the pain meds I’m on.

Any tips now will be helpful for when the time comes.

Get off the narcotics as quickly as you can. After shoulder surgery, my first visit back, 4-5 days after surgery, I asked for a prescription for 500 mg Naproxen Sodium. I switched immediately and honestly think it worked as well without the narcotic side effects. The Naproxen is not addictive at all. Narcotic pain killers will grab a hold of you and doesn’t like to let go. Another thing, don’t go cold turkey. Switch to Naproxen during the day and only use the narcotic for nights. After a few days or a week switch nights to naproxen.

Good advice. I don’t mind taking narcotics if they’re truly medically necessary, but I don’t want to take them unless they’re needed. Just too much risk. Even though they don’t do anything for me other than the codeine cough syrup makes me feel like **** unless I half the dose.

I have stool softeners and laxative. Little weary about taking them since it’s really difficult to walk- don’t want to make a mess in the bed.

Start the stool softeners and some fiber now. Those pain killers will stop you up like a quickcrete enema. Drink lots of fluids. Yea I get that it’s painful to get up and go piss but opioid constipation is no joke.

I broke an ankle and had shoulder joint replacement in last few years and got the usual pain med 'scripts but never took the first one. I stuck w/ alternating Naproxen, Ibuprofen and Extra Strength Tylenol and had no issues w/ pain and therefore no withdrawal/dependency issues

Good, you should be. They are addictive. You shouldn't need to take the meds regularly for more than a couple of days post op. After that you should only be taking them if you do something specific that aggravates your knee and causes it to flare up......and this should only go on for a few weeks.
