The shame of it was that the old guy wasn’t being a Touron. He and this woman who escaped were pretty far away - hard to tell from a telephoto lens viewpoint, but he wasn’t like those classic morons baiting Bison while standing 20 feet away.

That bison was riled up though and seemed to get triggered by a pickup going by before that clip, and then ran toward the road. This dude unfortunately was immediately in the crosshairs.

and I’m someone who usually blames the stupid tourist.

Many years ago, I did a 24 hour race in Custer State Park, SD. Before the start, we received a briefing from a wildlife biologist. He told us to maintain at least 25 yards distance from bison and if you see their tail go up, it is a sign they are about to charge. Saw many bison during the race but luckily no issues.

Having done some extensive hiking in Yellowstone and Grand Teton among other “ wilderness” areas, it’s a great idea to go out the first time with a guide that understands the local wildlife and their behaviors. Bison during the Rut are a wildcard.

We have seen “ tourons” do some incredibly dumb things.

Twenty six years ago in Yellowstone this exchange happened…….

Japanese tourists with camera gear photographing Buffalo from 10 feet away……..

Fly fishing Guide with Tgar…… “ Hey, do you know what that animal is? “……..

Tourons……..” It’s a Buffalo………..

Guide……” It’s a 2000 pound goring machine that can kill you in an instant “………

Tourons…… giggling, nodding, and exchanging glances, …. “ Come on, lets get another photo”

We split.

You didn’t have to outrun the bison. You had to outrun the other runners. 🙂

I was at Theodore Roosevelt NP and few years ago and bison were everywhere. There was one point where a solitary bison locked eyes on me and I was about 100 yards away. I immediately started to back away and look for a ravine to escape down. They are no joke.
Yep, the big herds are normally not a threat. Beware the lone old ostracized male. They become moody and can be extremely dangerous.

He was fairly close. I honestly wouldn't be on my feet within a hundred yards of them. At least in a vehicle I can get away. I checked grok and it would take 5.5 - 7 seconds to cover a hundred yards. 25 yards is too close imo.

Last September, was in Yellowstone with a friend - we had rented a m/c and did a trip through the Park. Every herd of bison would mandate that the traffic would stop so people could get out and take photos and try to get the bison to make some sort of move. We, of course, got stuck in the line of traffic.

It's one thing to do that when you can run back to the relative safety of your car. It's a whole other thing when you are on a m/c with no discernable defense between you and a 2000 lb animal except the hope that you can catch a break in traffic to get out of there and also hope you are faster than the bison can run.

Fishing the Little Firehole River… summer of 1990… huge bison crosses river, 20 yards downstream. Hour later back in rental vehicle, listening to radio from the park office telling me that the bison is most dangerous critter in the park!!

Friends of mine were riding near Sturgis during Bike Week and had to stop for a herd of bison that decided to cross the road. They shut the bikes off and sat still while the herd wandered through. Nobody was touched- but they were terrified.

I thought about that as my son and I drove very slowly past them with them not very far from the car.

I don't know if the man with his grandson got out of a car right before this or if they had been walking a while before this incident. I've passed within feet by these animals in a car before and they are amazing. But, I think it is inane that random people on internet feel the need to criticize this man. Lots of assumptions, and lots of Holiday Inn Express expertise that must be expressed. Always happens with these situations. They were walking away at a decent distance. Sometimes stuff just happens and now he has a famous story to tell.

Headed there next week. Hope to see some bison (from a safe distance).

Who was the poster with the 4.4 40? He would be safe…. The coolest fish?
I kind of remembered that, and I think later he might've sort of rebranded himself. I think he was big into digging into Covid. He still seemed a little goofy to me, but whatever.
