Gino Marchetti,longtime Baltimore Colts' All-Pro defensive end,has passed away at age 92.

While he was still playing he founded the restaurant chain,Gino's.

He was in the Battle Of The Bulge.

A life well lived.

NewWaveDave and I were big Colts fans from the mid 60s on. They had some great teams. I remember when there was either a Gino's or Carol's Hamburgers in New Brunswick , either in the spot where Greasy Tony's was or near it.

Favorite player was Johnny Unitas of course (my Lithuanian heritage) and crazy about Raymond Berry and Ted Hendricks too .

Marchetti was one of the best DE's I ever saw. In one game I saw against the Jints he lived in their backfield. They just couldn't block him. And they couldn't run his way either. Great, Great ball player. RIP Gino.

Gotta stop in there. Gino's was the first fast food restaurant in our little suburban town in South Jersey (the Whitman Square section of Washington Twp in Gloucester County) and we used to bike there all the time as kids - great fried chicken and burgers, at least for a 10-year old, lol.

My parents are both from Baltimore and moved to NJ in 1954, after my dad finished his BS in mech eng'g at Maryland (and was lucky enough to be there for their one national championship in 1953) and got a job at GE, where he worked for the next 39 years. He was a lunatic Colts fan, just like the cast in Diner (the "Quiz" scene is below), so I became one, too. Orioles also. 1969 was a tough year for us.

I'll never forget that Colts-Jets Super Bowl in 1969, when I was almost 8 years old and my dad freaking out - seriously freaking out, as they were being outplayed by the "freakin' AFL Jets" as he kept screaming. At one point in the 3Q, he banished my mom to the upstairs of the house because she wasn't "appropriately upset" by the prospect of the Colts losing. Comical in hindsight - they were divorced within 2 years of that game.

In high school I talked my parents into letting me go by myself to a Colts game. I wrote to the ticket office asking to purchase a ticket for the Packers. I received a nice hand written letter from a lady saying there were no individual game tickets for the GB game but other games were available. If I wanted I could send a $10 or $20 check payable to the Colts directly to her with my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice and she would make sure I received a ticket. I picked the Rams. Day of the game I got up before dawn, took a bus to Penn station in Newark, train to Baltimore, and bus to the stadium getting there a bit before kickoff.

The Colts were up by 10 in the 4th but a FG and TD or visa versa by LA tied it at 24. I do remember the Rams hit a long FG that hit and bounced over the crossbar in front of the LC bleachers. I then bussed and trained my way back to Jersey where my Dad picked me up.

Long day for a tie game lol.

i could be wrong but believe I read this in a Sports Illustrated article last year on Gino. The fried chicken was KFC. KFC was sold as an offering of Gino's. This is my recollection of my youth as well. We had a Gino's in town.

I worked for Gino's for 18 years, ran about 10 different stores. Gino's had the NJ exclusive franchise rights to KFC. except the one
on RT. 22 in Plainfield, which was owned by the Colonel's niece. So when the deal was made she got to keep hers. WE also had
the franchise rights in Maryland, Delaware and large sections of Eastern Pa. His partners' were Lew Fisher a great player for
Ohio State, he actually ran the business. and Alan Ameche who scored the winning touchdown in the greatest game ever played
against the Giants. We got into some debt when we tried to open stores in Chicago and failed because we did not have the
KFC rights Then we got more into dept when we tried the same thing in California. But the ones out here about 450 stores did great
and it was a great company to work for. Gino tried to visit his stores frequently. So while we tried to clear the debt Alan Ameche's son got
killed in a car accident, and Alan just stopped caring and sold our stock to Marriot Hotels, who owned Roy Rogers, Roy Rogers
did not want the drive thru only stores so they sold them to KFC who needed them to start selling KFC chicken in these 3 states.
Roy Rodgers also didn't want the Gino's that were close to existing Roy Rodgers stores. and sold them to companies like
Wendy's for a low price. I was in a KFC take out at the time so I had to go to KFC not Roy Rodgers. KFC was a very
difficult company to work and after five years I just had to leave, even though I won several awards for the stores I ran.

I remembered the Gino's in Hackensack changing over to a Roy Rogers and then go out of business not look after that.

Yup. My freshman year at RU was 1978. At that time, Ginos was right near the Albany St. Station, very close to the legendary Showcase Lounge. Ah...the memories.

Maybe you know Pete, whose family owned the Den and now Sophie's (French Bistro in Somerset)? My wife grew up with his older sister in HP. Nice folks and one of my favorite restaurants in the area.

No, to run that Gino's there was always a hired off duty policeman on the patio with one hand on
his holster. No way I was going to take a camera
outside. One time a guy ordered French Fries
with his meal, I said a three minute wait on French fries, he and his companions tried
to flip my car over.
