Played it once. Didn’t seem like there was any strategy or skill involved. Basically only about 1 play possible on each trick. I thought to myself that it was kind of a mindless game then realized that is probably why it is only popular in iowa.
it's a trick-taking card game commonly played in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Great Britain, and the United States. It is played with a deck of 24, 28, or 32 standard playing cards. Mick Dundee is rumored to have played it.
My family plays a game called 500 that is similar to euchre. We play with a 45 card deck (no 2s or 3s and one joker). The rank of cards is the same. But there are 10 card hands with 5 in the blind. The scoring and bidding are also different. But it’s similar. We like it better than euchre. There’s more strategy in the bidding and playing.
Played it a lot when I was younger because wanted to learn a new card game. As others have stated pitch is the go to. 10 or 13 usually. Love call partner
I have played tons of Euchre. My family is from NE Indiana, where it is big. So that is the game of choice whenever our family in Omaha or extended family from IN gets together. We'll get several tables going at once with partners. Very social game. Also play some 3 handed Euchre if we can't do partners.
Pitch and Euchre are both trump-based, both played trick by trick.
What sucks about pitch is that once trump is determined, about 70% of the cards are utterly worthless. The bid becomes super important to control the trump. Some people are crazy aggressive bidders, which results in your best draw of the night being discarded because somebody was feeling Yolo.
Euchere has the benefit that every card can potentially matter. You can win without trump. It’s simpler, a little less strategy, a little more luck about which card or two is played first. Bidding isnt a huge deal.
I prefer pitch because my family plays it. Euchre is easier to play a few hands quickly.

That's true for 10 point pitch, but not for 4 point pitch; the non-trump cards still matter towards "game." The importance of being able to call the trump, and the bidding, is part of the appeal for me.
I learned to add playing cribbage. You quickly learn which combinations make 15 (for 2). We play for high stakes -- a quarter a game and fifty cents for a skunk -- ha!. You can't change the cards dealt to you. Strategy comes into play with the discard for the crib and with pegging. My family played a lot of 10-point and some 4-point pitch (high, low, jack, and the game). I've never played Euchere -- sounds interesting.
When I was 7 or 8, I lost 30 or 40 bucks playing at the family poker game. My grandpa called my mom the next morning feeling badly about it and wanting to return the money. She told him no. 20 years later, I was playing for a living.
I get what you mean—it felt pretty straightforward, with not much room for strategy. It almost seems like a game you can play without overthinking, which might be why it clicks with some people. But yeah, I'm not sure it's the most engaging for those who enjoy deeper strategy. I guess it's more of a casual vibe, which might explain its popularity in places where people want to unwind!
I saw your post while looking for smth myself, and Euchre is a great game, especially if you’ve got a good group of people to play with. It’s simple, but it keeps you on your toes. I think the best part about it is how fast-paced it is. You can get in a few rounds quickly, so it doesn’t drag on like other card games. I remember learning it from some friends a few years back, and it took a few games to get the hang of the trump suit and all that, but once you get the flow of it, it’s a blast. I’m a big fan of playing with spades as the trump card, but I know everyone has their way of playing. It’s one of those games that’s more about having fun with the people you’re playing with than anything else.

I have a Cribbage app on my phone. Have played nearly 9,200 games against the “Brutal” setting (toughest). I am above 50% win percentage.
I play a few games during commercial breaks of Husker FB and BB games to bring them good luck.
Where in NE Indiana? I remember playing euchre in Indiana in middle school. Played cribbage and gin rummy with my father. Grandmother taught us pinnacle and canasta.
My parents grew up in Auburn and Garrett. So have family in Angola (Lake Gage), Auburn, Garrett, Peru, Columbia City, Barbee Lakes, etc. I grew up spending close to 2 weeks/year in Indiana, one in the summer at the lakes, the other around Christmas time. Tons of cards played
My wife is from Ft Wayne and her cousins are the 3rd generation to own a house on Lake James outside Angola, IN.
I lived in Angola for 6.5 years. Know that area very well. I could relate to the Euchre card playing because that's what they do.My parents grew up in Auburn and Garrett. Tons of memories from that area...So my brother was born in Angola, my dad went to Tri-State, and my grandpa (and later uncle) owned Angola Concrete, located behind the McDonalds on Stocker for several decades- until the Home Depot moved into town and ran them out of business.
Me and my cousin used to cruise the main drag back in the day in Angola. Those Indiana girls used to be aggressive
.Loved Lake James, was/is the lake with all the action! Was there this past summer, stayed on Lake Gage at my uncle's. Of course stopped at Tom's Donuts!
I got busted drinking one night at Pokagon State Park beach with some girls we met that night at the campground there.
