I started shooting competition at a young age and have always had good luck with Beretta. I don't shoot that much anymore but will shoot a tournament or two a year. The key to picking a gun is finding one that fits him and parts are available. If your son plans on shooting a lot he will have breakdowns no matter what he shoots. Go to a NSCA registered event and take note of what everyone else is shooting, this will give you an idea where to start. There is nothing wrong with buying a used well taken care of sporting gun either. If you can find a used Beretta 682 or 686 that would be my first choice for a o/u, a Beretta 400 or used 391 would be my choice for an auto. Parts, accessories and chokes are easily found for both. On another note don't buy a hunting gun to use in sporting clays, the style of shooting is completely different and will be a disservice to your son. If money was no object there is no finer shotgun than a krieghoff.
