tbf.... elvis sung hundreds of gospel songs... about 1/3 were pre-CW.....

yes, love me tender's melody was from the 19th century - which made it interesting for a pop song... then again, LedZep stole everyone of their songs from early 20th Century blues singers...
It’s fine to rework a cover and modify/ or “modernize” it so to speak. Many rock bands in the late 60s and early 70s were “rocking” up earlier blues songs (of course the originals tended to be more earthy and authentic). The problem with Led Zeppelin early on was changing some of the arrangements and calling the song their own and not crediting the creator/writer . They were often sued and rightfully so. I mean “The Lemon Song”? Try combining Howlin Wolf’s “Killing Floor” and Robert Johnson’s “Travelling Riverside Blues”.
